  MOUNT HOREB Elizabeth J. "Betty" Burns died Monday after a five-year battle with breast cancer, surrounded by her family and under the tender care of the staff at Ingleside. She was 77. Betty lived a life committed to family, faith, friends, nursing and community service. Despite having her hands full with a large family and extended family, she always found ways to serve others and open her heart to many for whom she became a second mom, trusted friend or mentor. Elizabeth Jane Schwarz was born Oct. 30, 1932, to Andrew and Rose (Merget) Schwarz, but she was always called "Betty." She was proud of being a farm girl, growing up on a farm between Hilbert and Chilton, Wis., in Calumet County. Betty graduated from Hilbert High School in 1950, and then fulfilled a lifelong dream of becoming a nurse. She studied at St. Agnes School of Nursing (now Marian University) in Fond du Lac. After graduating from St. Agnes in 1953, Betty moved to Milwaukee and became a nurse at Milwaukee County General. In Milwaukee, Betty met photography student Cyril Burns. The two married in 1957 and moved to Mount Horeb in 1958, where Cy opened Burns Studio of Photography. Betty spent the majority of her nursing career at the Dane County Home West in Verona, and neighboring Badger Prairie Health Care Center. She was a geriatric nurse and inservice instructor until her retirement in 1998. But Betty's dedication to nursing others stretched well beyond the corridors of Dane West and Badger Prairie. Before Mount Horeb had an emergency medical service, the Burns' family phone often rang at all hours of the day and night when neighbors needed Betty's help. When Mount Horeb began a volunteer emergency medical service in 1976, Betty was among the first to serve. From the squad's beginning until her retirement in 2004, Betty helped the people of Mount Horeb and for that and many other services to the community she was named the Mount Horeb Lions Club's Citizen of the Year in 1990. On holiday weekends, Betty flew with Friend in the Sky, the Air National Guard's helicopter rescue squad. She also was an adventurous Girl Scout leader, catechism teacher and CPR instructor and trainer. She volunteered for the American Red Cross and at voting polls. She was a member of St. Ignatius Catholic Church and the American Legion Auxiliary. Betty loved sports and her love of basketball was so strong that her children knew they better not call her during the high school state tournaments. She was a magnificent cook, a foodie before the word was invented, and loved to spend hours poring over cookbooks for inspiration and trying foods from all over the world. But most of all, Betty loved her family, who will miss her in ways that are indescribable. She is survived by six children: Lynn Burns, Mount Horeb; Lori (Steve) Brooks, Walla Walla, Wash.; Jane Burns, Mount Horeb; Sue Burns (Kevin "Vinnie" Ruppel), Appleton; Patrick (Sara) Burns, Mount Horeb; and Peter (Katie) Burns, Mount Horeb; four grandchildren: Sabrina Burns, Madeline Brooks, Caroline Brooks and Eden Burns. She is also survived by her sister, Rita Novak; four sisters-in-law: Lucy Schwarz, Green Lake; Anna Mae (Floyd) Dierdorff, Sebring, Fla.; Mona (Dave) Scott, Hollandale; and Jan Burns, Madison; and dozens of nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cyril, on June 14, 1999; her parents; her brothers Earl, Jerome, Eugene and Florian. Memorials may be made to the Mount Horeb Food Pantry, 102 E. Lincoln St., Mount Horeb, WI 53572. Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 30, 2010, at St. Ignatius Catholic Church, Mount Horeb, WI, with Msgr. Delbert Schmelzer officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery on Hwy S in Mount Horeb. A visitation will be held from 3-7 p.m. on Thursday, July 29, 2010, at the ELLESTAD CAMACHO FUNERAL HOME, 500 N 8th St., Mount Horeb, WI, where a Nightingale Tribute Service will be at 7:00 p.m. Betty thought the world of many involved in her care, including Drs.
