  Augustin Grignon Recollections
  Son of Joseph Ducharme and Therese Trottier. Jean was a fur trader and a political figure in Lower Canada Jean entered the fur trade in the Illinois country. When traders from Pennsylvania moved into the Ohio valley, Jean was sent as a courier in 1754 and helped build Fort Duquesne in 1755. During the fall of 1755 he supervised a group of men bringing supplies to the fort from the Illinois country. After the British took control of New France, Ducharme again was involved in the fur trade. At this time he was operating in the La Baye (Green Bay, WI) area. In 1763, he transported ammunition to Michilimackinac against a then British ban (due to Indian uprisings). He was later arrested and imprisoned at Montreal. In 1772, Jean was trading with the Little Osages on the Missouri River. The Spanish tried to capture him, but he was able to escape to Montreal. The outbreak of the American revolution did not first hinder trade. While Ducharme was spending the winter of 1775-1776 with his family at Lachine, the Americans captured Montreal. Jean remained neutral, but did sell the Americans food. Though he later helped the British expel the invaders, British authorities put him in jail for selling the Americans supplies. In 1777, Ducharme was again active in the Indian trade. While at Prairie du Chien (WI) he was captured by the Spanish. He was able to win his release. In 1779, Jean became a partner in a general store a Fort Michilimackinac. That winter he was asked to assist in a British expedition against the Spanish at Cahokia (IL) and Saint Louis (MO). The expedition was a failure and he returned to Michilimackinac. After he retired from the fur trade, Ducharme represented Montreal County in the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada from 1796-1807. White-haired and nearly blind, Jean died the day after turning 84.
