  Hubbard I Watrous Chilton Times January 30, 1904 H. I. Watrous died at his residence in Taycheedah on Monday morning, Jan. 18, of acute gastritis. Though he had been in feeble health for several years his condition was not such as to furnish special cause for apprehension. He arose Sunday morning, apparently in his usual health, breakfasted with his family, and, in a little more than an hour later was attacked by the disease that ended his life. Hubbard I. Watrous was born September 18, 1823, near Montrose, Pennsylvania, where he grew to manhood. In 1849 he married Charlotte M. Foster, of that place, and soon afterward settled on a farm, which they continued to occupy for several years. After disposing of the farm in Pennsylvania, Mr. and Mrs. Watrous removed to Crown Point, Indiana, where they remained about a year, coming to Wisconsin in 1856 and locating at Hayton, which was his home for more than thirty years. He experienced many of the inconveniences and privation common to the lot of pioneers at that time, but by unflagging industry and perseverance he succeeded in establishing what was considered at that time a model home. An accident which crippled his right arm led him to abandon active labor on the farm. He then built and conducted a general store. In 1862 he formed a business partnership with Ansel Watrous, the firm name being H. H. & A. Watrous. The firm dissolved partnership in 1874, since which time the deceased followed his chosen occupation, that of carpenter, until advancing years and failing health made active work impossible. He held the position of postmaster of Hayton for sixteen years. Although he was not a politician in the ordinary acceptation of the term, he was always a staunch republican. He took an interest in public affairs and was always ready to assist in any enterprise which gave a promise of permanent benefit to the community in which he lived. He held various town offices, but was so thoroughly domestic in his tastes that he preferred his home and his chosen work to anything that would require his absence therefrom. In his early manhood he united with the Baptist church, in which faith he remained steadfast up to the time of his death. A few years after the death of his first wife, which occurred in 1866, he married Mrs. Eliza Potter, widow of the late T. J. Potter. He is survived by his wife and six children— Mrs. M. S. Atwood of Beloit, Kan.; Mrs. H. G. Krake of St. Louis, Mo.; George F. and Martin H. Watrous of Denver; Ben W. Watrous of Cheboygan, Mich.; and Dr. H. L. Watrous of Lindsay, Wis.; the latter being a son of his second marriage. The funeral was held at his late residence in Taycheedah, Rev. H. C. Miller, pastor of the First Baptist church in Fond du Lac, officiating.
