  Dorothy L. Palermo, age 91, of Appleton, formerly of Clintonville passed away from the arms of her family and friends, into the arms of the Lord on Wednesday afternoon, December 31, 2008, at Appleton Medical Center. On October 14, 1917, she was given life to a wonderful family born in Chicago to the late Hartley Craven Laycock Sr. and Amy Grace Bradley. Dorothy grew up surrounded with love from her parents and her sister, Helen Grace Casper and brothers: Hartley C. Laycock, Jr., Ralph Bradley Laycock, and George William Laycock. She attended Denison University, Granville, Ohio, and spent time helping her parents and older brother "Bill" operate the Brevard Hotel in Cocoa Beach, Florida. On September 28, 1940, she wed Eugene L. Palermo Sr. in Chicago, IL. The couple lived in the Chicago area until retirement when they moved to the Township of Belle Plaine, Shawano County (Cloverleaf Lakes, Clintonville). Their marriage lasted 46 years on this Earth and a lifetime in Dorothy's heart. Gene made her life very special and their time together with friends "at the lake" was delightful during their retired years. Dorothy was thankful for her loving husband who devoted his time, knowledge and energy to his family and to many young people. Eugene Sr. passed away on July 2, 1986. Together, they had one son, Eugene "Skip," who has always given his parents love and support. "Skip" found the love of his life and married Suzanne M. De Bruin who blessed the entire family's lives with her generosity, commitment, joy, tenderness, love and caring ways. Her entire family embraced the Palermo family and enriched their lives more than they could have ever imagined. Expressions Dorothy shared about her life: I have met so many people that have endeared and enriched my life. I have been truly blessed that they brought so much joy, laughter, faith and meaning to it and for that friendship and love, I am eternally grateful. I want my friends and those members of the Bethany Union Church in Chicago and those at the United Methodist Church in Clintonville to know what a comfort they have been to me in the sad and tough times and how truly happy they made me when we were together in meetings and fellowship. I do not want you to mourn my death, but to celebrate your life. For now, you must make the most of the life you have been blessed with on Earth until we are together again. The Palermo family would like to thank the doctors and nurses of Theda Care, Primary Care and the Appleton Medical Center who have shown so much compassion to Dorothy and her family over the last two years with her medical needs. A special thank you to the Appleton Heritage Woods Assisted Living Staff, who were very special to Dorothy. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law: Eugene L. "Skip" and Sue Palermo, Appleton; her 100-year-old brother, Hartley C. Laycock Jr., Naples, FL; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Eugene Sr.; her sister, Helen G. Casper; three brothers: baby Laycock died at birth, George W. and Ralph B. Laycock. Per Dorothy's request, graveside services will be announced and held in the spring of 2009 at the Graceland Cemetery, Clintonville, WI, with burial next to her loving husband, Eugene Sr. In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be determined. The Eberhardt-Stevenson Funeral Home, Clintonville, is assisting her family with the arrangements.
