  Grace G. Smith, age 95, died Sunday morning, February 18, 2007, at Oakridge Gardens Nursing Center. She was born July 5, 1911, in Oglesby, IL, the daughter of Florence Bone and Clyde C. Smith. She lived in Appleton in her early years where her father came from an early Appleton pioneer family. They moved to Neenah when her father was transferred by Kimberly Clark. She graduated from Neenah High School and worked at Kimberly Clark as a secretary for S.F. Shattuck for eight years. In 1943, she joined the first US Woman's Marines Corp and served 34 months during WWII ending her career as Sergeant Major. The Marine Corp held a special place in her heart throughout her life. She then graduated from Winslow School of Court Reporting in Boston and worked as a court reporter in Wisconsin for 35 years until her retirement in 1985. She had a life long love of music and studied piano at Lawrence Conservatory of Music, and encouraged music education for all her nieces and nephews. She was an active supporter of numerous civic and community associations including serving on the Neenah Menasha Y board, Neenah Historical Society, a member of the Appleton Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, a member of Peabody Manor Auxiliary, and a member of Tuesday Club in Neenah. She attended the First Presbyterian Church of Neenah for over 50 years. Her early years were spent at Calvary Baptist Church where her father was a founding member. She was preceded in death by her brothers: Glenn R. Smith, Donald E. Smith; her sisters: Alice Wittenborn, Jean Ofenbeck; and special friends, Ruth Breitung and Norman O. Johnson. Her surviving nieces and nephews include: Linda Mowles, Chris Smith, Mary Ofenbeck, Steve Ofenbeck, Curt Ofenbeck, Tom Smith, Jim Smith, Bill Smith, Jane Tennant, Ken Smith, and Judy Lenz; and has many grand- and great-grand-nieces and nephews. She will be missed; she was the thread that created family gatherings, and was forever taking pictures which has given us rich family memories. A memorial service will be held on Monday, February 26, 2007, at 11 a.m., at Westgor Funeral Home, Nee-nah, with Pastor Joe Urcavich officiating. A gathering of family and friends will be held on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Neenah Historical Society.
