  Patrick Coleman Saunders, age 30, of Madison, WI, died in an accident early this week. He was born in Neenah, WI, on March 24, 1978, and grew up in Appleton. He also spent two years in Florence, Italy, as a young man. He graduated from Appleton North High School, where he was active in choir and drama. He also graduated from Macalester College in St. Paul, MN, where he double-majored in computer science and music. Patrick came out in high school, and he continued to act as an advocate for gay and lesbian rights throughout his life. He later lived in Nashville, TN, and Madison, WI, before earning a Master's Degree in Computer Science at the University of Minnesota. He worked in Ann Arbor, MI, for over a year before recently returning to Madison, where he had accepted a position as a software engineer. He was very excited about the position and his return to Wisconsin. Patrick was a talented musician, particularly in piano and composition. He was also a creative artist, often surprising his family and friends with gifts of paintings and other art. He was an enthusiastic if unorthodox chef, and always fun to be around when he was cooking something new. Patrick was a joy to all who knew him, and was much loved for his ability to make any social occasion smoother and livelier. Patrick will be deeply missed by his mother, Carol, brother Josh, and father George, as well as George's wife, Bickley, and her children Amy and Matt. He leaves behind an enormous community of treasured friends and loved ones. A reception celebrating Patrick's life will be held on Sunday, September 14, from 2 to 5 p.m. at Lucinda's in Colman Hall on the Lawrence University Campus in Appleton.
