  Delano E. Zimmerman, M.D., passed on to his eternal reward on July 26, 2008, in his home in Neenah, Wis. Born in Fond du Lac, Wis., on March 21, 1933, he was the first of nine children of Elmer Herbert Zimmerman and Agatha Angeline (Freund) Zimmerman. Del attended St. Joseph's School in Fond du Lac and received a scholarship to St. Mary's Springs Academy, graduating in 1951. In 1952, he joined the U.S. Navy and became a Hospital Corpsman, serving aboard the USNS Geiger and USNS Maurice Rose carrying troops to and from Europe in the North Atlantic. In 1956, Del enrolled in a Pre-Med curriculum at the then Oshkosh State College, transferring to the University of Wisconsin, Madison in January 1960. In the fall of 1960, he entered the University of Wisconsin Medical School, receiving his M.D. degree in 1965. Dr. Zimmerman's internship was at Hennepin County General Hospital in Minneapolis, Minn., where in the fall of 1965, he met Nancy Margaret Garry, of Charles City, Iowa, in the HCGH Emergency Room where she was employed as a RN, BSN. On Aug. 13, 1966, they were married at Immaculate Conception Church in her home town. Married life for them began in Neenah, Wis., and Dr. Del was employed as a General Practicioner at Winnebago State Hospital. In 1967, he became a Family Practicioner, affiliated with Theda Clark Hospital in Neenah. Three children were born to Del and Nancy, Kate Marie Zimmerman Lennard, Joseph Garry Zimmerman and Nick Elmer Zimmerman. In January 1973, Del was offered a position with Community Emergency Services at St. Elizabeth's Hospital, Appleton, Wis., where he became their first full-time Emergency Physician. In Spring, 1977, after taking a position as Clinical Assistant Professor at Southern Illinois School of Medicine and Memorial Medical Center, the Zimmermans moved to Springfield, Ill. Dr. Del became active in several national emergency physician organizations and was on the Board of the Illinois College of Emergency Physicians. In October 1992, he retired from clinical medicine and Nancy and Del returned to Neenah. Del continued as a medical consultant for the State of Illinois, Department of Disability Determination, retiring in 2008. In Neenah, Del and Nancy became active in their church, St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, Neenah, and local activities including the UW Oshkosh Learning in Retirement, the Oshkosh Bird Club, and the Oshkosh Symphony Orchestra where Del served as a board member. He was also a member of the Retired Physicians Lunch Group. He is survived by his wife, Nancy and their three children, Kate (Lee) Lennard, Joseph, Nick (Jodi) Zimmerman and six grandchildren, Scott, Adam, Michael, and Brian Lennard; Delaney and Amir Zimmerman. Survivors also include his eight siblings, Claire (Jerry) Mueller, Kent (Phyllis) Zimmerman, Janet (Dick) Giebel, James Zimmerman, Mark (Barb) Zimmerman, Glenn (Mary Kay) Zimmerman, Rita (Dale) Paul, Linda (Mark) LaMendola, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Del was preceded in death by his parents; his sister-in-law, Yoshiko Zimmerman and his nephew, Michael Mueller. The family would like to thank Dr. Jack Swanson, Palliative (comfort) Care Specialist and ThedaCare Hospice Service. In appreciation for his medical schooling, Del has made an anatomical donation to the University of Wisconsin Department of Anatomy. Memorial Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 1, 2008, at St. Margaret Mary Church, 620 Division St., Neenah, Wis., 54956, with the Rev. Michael Ingold officiating. Friends may call at the Kessler Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 31, 2008, and from 9:30 a.m. Friday at the church until the time of the mass. A parish prayer service will be held at the funeral home at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in Del's name to the St. Margaret Mary Religious Formation Committee, the Neenah Historical Society, or UW Oshkosh Learning in Retirement Speaker's Fund.
