  Walter Schmidt, 92, longtime high school principal, counselor and teacher in the Kaukauna Area School District, passed away at Appleton Medical Center on Thursday, September 24, 2009. He was born in Manitowoc on April 26, 1917, to Walter and Lillian Schmidt. He is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Ruth; daughters, Debbie (David Simpson) Schmidt of North Lake, WI, and Becky (Barry) O'Connor of Appleton. He was proud of, and truly admired, his grandsons, Ben (Sara) O'Connor of Cottage Grove, MN, Sam (Kate) O'Connor of Appleton, and Alex O'Connor of Madison, WI, his Russian exchange granddaughter, Katerina Pichugina, as well as his new great-grandsons, Cole Walter and Jack Ryan. Many appreciated colleagues, former students and friends are also left with a hole in their hearts to be filled with memories of Walt's humility, wisdom, kindness and wit. Freud, his relentlessly loyal four-footed companion and surrogate counselor, will miss his many snacks and long walks. To remember him, Walt would want you to lead lives of quiet, effective service, to deeply love your friends and family, to care about education, literature, and the arts, and to enjoy the loyalty and foibles of man's best friend. He was preceded in death by his parents and his canine companions, Lucy, Canis, Oaf, Chaucer and Trollope. He admired Abraham Lincoln for his compassionate dedication, humility and eloquence, and, in addition to many others, he loved this quote of his favorite 18th century writer, Laurence Sterne, "if I should seem now and then to trifle upon the road, - or should sometimes put on a fool's cap with a bell to it, for a moment or two as we pass along, - don't fly off, - but rather courteously give me credit for a little more wisdom than appears upon my outside: - and as we jog on, either laugh with me, or at me, or in short do any thing, - only keep your temper." A memorial service will be held to celebrate Walt's life at 2:30 next Friday, October 2, at Memorial Presbyterian Church, 803 E. College Avenue, Appleton. Walt's family will be greeting friends from 1:00 until the service. After the service, there will be refreshments in the church parlor. Memorial contributions will be added to the Walter G. Schmidt Scholarship Fund at Kaukauna High School. Boettcher Family Funeral Home, Kaukauna, is assisting the family. 920-766-2099
