  John J. Laughrin, age 84, of Chilton, died on Wednesday, December 29, 2010, at his home. He was born September 7, 1926, in Hilbert, son of the late John G. and Francis (Carroll) Laughrin. John served in the Merchant Marines during WWII. He married Jean Meissner on June 10, 1947, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Reedsville. John learned the cheese making trade from Uncle Art and worked as a cheese maker at numerous locations in the area, including Slovan, Vignes and Sherwood. John later worked at Aluminum Specialty in Chilton and he retired from Brillion Iron Works in 1988. He was a member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church, formerly St. Augustine Parish, the Knights of Columbus and was a 40-year member of AA. In his free time, John tried to fish whenever possible and enjoyed camping. John was an avid Packers, Badgers and Brewers fan, but was most known for being the #1 fan of any and all of his grandchildren playing sports. He also enjoyed traveling; he and Jean traveled to various locations including Jamaica eight times, and fishing in Canada. John took his Catholic Faith very seriously. He and Jean made sure to pray the Rosary every day; prayers that surely went a long way in helping those he loved and prayed for. Playing cards was another hobby of John's. The games he enjoyed were Sheepshead and Gin-Rummy, which he usually lost to Jean. John will be remembered as a truly great man who was liked by all who met him. Although he loved spending time in his favorite recliner, he went out of his way to help those in need. Neighbors and strangers knew they could always ask this kind and loving soul for help with projects large or small. Survivors include his wife: Jean; children: James (Wendy) Laughrin of Sheboygan Falls, William (Debbie) Laughrin of Little Suamico, Kathy (Morris) Fagg of Chilton, Jackie Bloedorn and special friend, Bob Schneider of Chilton, Buzz (Pam) Laughrin of Chilton, Carol (Dave) Mallmann of Chilton; 17 grandchildren: Sarah, Jim, Anne, David, Bill, Scott, Morris, Shelly, Melanie, Nicky, Mike, Jeff, John, Katrina, Justin, Josh and Jill; numerous great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a sister: Carol (Richard) Jahnke of Appleton; and a brother: Pat (Ginny) Laughrin of Hilbert. Funeral service will be at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, January 3, 2011, at Good Shepherd Catholic Church (54 E. Main St.) in Chilton with the Rev. Bob Kollath officiating. Burial will be in the St. Augustine Catholic Cemetery in Chilton. Friends may call at the Wieting Family Funeral Home (411 W. Main St.) in Chilton from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Sunday, January 2, 2011, and on Monday at the church from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. There will be a Knights of Columbus Vigil and a Parish Vigil Service Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the funeral home.
