  Halder M. Hansen 1st came to Montana in 1890 with his mother, brother and uncle to join his father (Hans J. Hansen), who was employed at the silver smelter in Great Falls. One of his boyhood friends there was the late Olaf Seltzer, noted Montana painter. The family later lived in East Helena then returned to Wisconsin in 1902. Halder returned to Great Falls in 1907, worked as a timekeeper at the smelter. He married Gertrude Alma Feurig on October 16, 1907. In 1914 the couple homesteaded on Frenchman's Ridge east of Fort Benton. In 1919 they moved into Fort Benton where Halder secured work in the Chouteau County court house, serving as clerk under Henry Donaldson for two years, then was appointed deputy county clerk. Mr. Hansen was elected as county clerk in the fall of 1924 and took office in early January, 1925. He served as county clerk until 1936, then decided not to be a candidate again, and Frank Morger was elected. Mr. Hansen was deputy in the office until Mr. Morger resigned in 1946 when he was renamed clerk, was re-elected a number of times and finally retired in January, 1959, after 27 years as county clerk and 12 years as deputy.
