  See Image Charles Brown, 93, Veteran of Civil War, Dies Friday Born in Vermont: Was One of Earliest Appleton Pioneers Charles F. Brown, 93. pioneer county resident and one of Appleton's two remaining Civil war veterans, died unexpectedly at 4 o'clock Friday afternoon at the home of his grandson, Everett Johnson, 836 E. John street. Mr. Brown was a member of the George D. Eggleston post of the Grand Army of the Republic and his death leaves one remaining member, Charles Gosha, 97, 111 E. College avenue. He was born in Brattelburo, Vt., April 27, 1845, and .was one of the earliest pioneers to settle in Outagamie county. He came to Appleton with his father at the age of seven and lived in the First ward all his life. He was employed at the old Richmond Paper mill, now the Interlake Paper company, for a number of years as a papermaker. He also worked with his father as a carpenter. Mr. Brown enlisted in the cavalry in 1863 at the age of 18 and served for the duration of the Civil war. Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Everett T. Phillips, and Mrs. Frank Cottrel. both of Menasha; nine grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 3:30 Tuesday afternoon at the Wichmann Funeral home with the Rev F. C. Reuter, pastor of the First English Lutheran church in charge. Burial will be in Riverside cemetery. The Spanish War veterans will conduct a military service at the grave.
