  Records of Ste. Anne parish, Detroit, show that he was baptised at St. Francis Xavier mission in Green Bay on 23 June 1825. He had previously been conditionally baptised by Dominique Brunette. Godparents were Bernard Grignon and Elizabeth Grignon.

  He enlisted August 15, 1862, in Co. B., Twenty-first Wisconsin Infantry, and served at the front until the second day's battle at Chicamauga, Sep. 20, 1863 when he was taken prisoner and confined in Andersonville prison where he suffered untold hardships until the close of the war. The only respite from his long and horrible confinement, was an attempted escape, in which after many hairbreadth perils he was re-captured and doomed to months of starvation and exposure. His life was full of pioneer and military incidents that now seem incredible and his descriptions and portrayals of life in Wisconsin in the early days sounded like romance.

  Mr. Andrew Grignon, died about 8 A.M. Monday, Sep 19, at the home of his son Antoine with whom he resided, a mile west of the village, in the 83rd year of his age. He was born at Green Bay in February, 1822, his father, Amable Grignon, having also been born and lived until his death on the present site of that city. His grand-father, Peter Grignon, came to Green Bay over 150 years ago and was married to a daughter of Chas. Langlade, one of the first white men who settled on Wisconsin territory. Mr. Grignon's parents moved to Grignon's Bend on the Wisconsin River, below Nekoosa, when he was quite young, and he lived at that place until nearly of age, occasionally attending school at Fort Winnebago and a mission school at Green Bay. He then worked for some years for his cousins, Alex. and Chas. Grignon, of Kaukauna, and also on the Wolf River, and also had a wide experience at hunting and trapping in the early days. He married and settled on the farm where he lived in 1850 or shortly after, being among the earliest pioneers to make a claim in the town of Winneconne. He enlisted August 15, 1862, in Co. B., Twenty-first Wisconsin Infantry, and served at the front until the second day's battle at Chicamauga, Sep. 20, 1863 -- forty-one years to a day previous to his death -- when he was taken prisoner and confined in Andersonville prison where he suffered untold hardships until the close of the war. The only respite from his long and horrible confinement, was an attempted escape, in which after many hairbreadth perils he was re-captured and doomed to months of starvation and exposure. His life was full of pioneer and military incidents that now seem incredible and his descriptions and portrayals of life in Wisconsin in the early days sounded like romance. He drove to the village last Saturday afternoon and was around his home Sunday, but his iron will was forced to succumb to his ailments and he passed away as stated, his death resulting from ailments caused by what he underwent at Andersonville. He joined the Grand Army in 1889 as a charter member of Azro Young Post, but had severed all connection with the Order several years ago. His funeral was held Thursday at 10 A.M. from his residence. Rev. Father Francis Linder officiating, and the remains were interred in the village cemetery.
