  Gladys A. Nelson, Menasha, age 89, passed away on Thursday, November 20, 2008, at St. Elizabeth Hospital. She was born on March 10, 1919, daughter of the late Joseph and Wilhelmina (Fink) Merkel. She married James Howard Nelson on June 9, 1940; he preceded her in death on November 1, 1954. She had volunteered for Winnebago County Mental Health and she also loved to play sheepshead, read and go fishing. Gladys was also an avid Packers fan. Gladys will be missed by her loving children: Karen Yonke, James H. (Donna) Nelson II, Nancy Nelson; 11 grandchildren: David (Janet) Yonke, Daniel (Chrystal) Yonke, Diana (Joe) Schneider, James H. Nelson III, Mike (Kerri) Svacina, Melissa Morales, Matt (Beth) Svacina, Myron Svacina, Lisa (Todd) Forseth, Andy (Laura) Kaminski, Mark (Jenny) Kaminski; 16 great-grandchildren; a brother, Lloyd Merkel; a brother-in-law; Hank Kohler; and other relatives and friends. Gladys was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Jessica Nelson; a brother, Jack Merkel, two sisters: Mary Heckner and Loretta Bunk. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, November 24, 2008, at Martens-Laemmrich Funeral Home, 312 Milwaukee Street, Menasha, with Rev. Lynn Spencer-Smith officiating. Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home. Interment will take place at Resthaven Cemetery, Menasha. In lieu of flowers, memorials will be appreciated. The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff of Manor Care who gave Gladys hugs and kisses and also for their kindness and care.
