  Lloyd Merkel, 89, Neenah, passed away at home Sunday, October 31, 2010. He was born August 31, 1921, in Neenah, son of Joseph and Minnie (Fink) Merkel. Lloyd married Marilyn Babbitts October 3, 1953, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Menasha, and they shared a glorious 46 years of marriage, prior to Marilyn's death November 12, 1999. Lloyd was a member of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, Neenah. He served our country during WWII as a U.S. Army veteran stationed in Australia. Lloyd was employed by Marathon Corporation (American Can and James River) until his retirement. Lloyd enjoyed vegetable gardening, canning, relaxing at the cottage on Lake Poygan, and his pontoon boat. Lloyd will be missed by his loving family: Margaret (Gerard) Kersten and Carl (Pamela) Merkel, both of Neenah; five grandchildren Paul (Kami) Kersten, David (Tammie) Kersten, Jennifer (special friend Scott Hughes), Merkel, Justin (fiancee Amber Killian) Merkel and Jessica (special friend Eric Harwood) Merkel; four great-grandchildren: Leia, Raya, Noah and Kayla Kersten. Lloyd was also preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Jack Merkel; three sisters: Mary Heckner, Loretta Bunk and Gladys Nelson; his father and mother-in-law who were a big part of the family Carl and Margaret Babbitts. Funeral services will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, November 3, 2010, at the Kessler Funeral Home, 304 S. Commercial Street, Neenah with Rev. Michael L. Ingold officiating. Interment will be in St. Margaret Cemetery, Neenah. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 4 p.m. Wednesday until the time of the service. Military honors will be performed by members of the U.S. Army following the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established. Lloyd's family would like to say a special thank you to Judy, Sandie, and Penny from Home Instead Care, as well as the staff at ThedaCare at Home Hospice, especially Cari, for their loving care and comfort during Lloyd's last days.
