  Biography	Charles Edgar Newman - In 1880 Charles Edgar Newman lived with his uncle, William S. Cleggett and his family on State St. in Appleton's Old Third Ward. Charles was the son of William's sister, Sarah Cleggett Newman. Charles' father was the abolitionist and "fiery preacher" William P. Newman. The family was living in Cincinnati when William Newman died in 1866. William's congregation raised $2,000 to buy a house in Appleton for Sarah, Charles, and William's four children from a previous marriage. Sarah died in Appleton in 1875. Charles was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti in 1860 during the brief time the family was living there, having relocated from Canada. Not surprisingly, Charles is the only person listed on Appleton's 1880 federal population census as having been born in Haiti. Charles moved to Kaukauna and by December, 1880 owned his own barbershop. He continued to improve his shop and later moved to more elegant quarters. In 1887 he traveled to Ontario, Canada to marry Annie Hollensworth, a niece of William Cleggett's wife, Rebecca. The following year Charles developed a cerebral embolism and died in 1889. Kaukauna newspaper accounts throughout the 1880s document the rise of Charles' business, his popularity in the community, and continuing reports of his declining health. After Charles' death, Annie Newman married Otto Kuehne and had five more children. She lived in Kaukauna for the rest of her life and died in 1945. Charles and Annie's only child, a daughter named 'Sworth Newman, graduated from Kaukauna High School and Lawrence College. She was an accomplished recitalist, theatre coach and athlete, and taught Expression and English at Peshtigo High School. She died at the young age of 31.
