Clarence Hartwig, age 88, died peacefully on September 8, 2016, with family at his side. He was born on October 2, 1927 in Oconto County, WI to William and Selma (Moede) Hartwig. After his formal education Clarence spent his early adult years working with his parents on several family farms until he moved into Appleton. His employment in the Fox Cities included delivering for Service Bakery, worked at Fox Tractor Company for twenty three years and then for a shorter period at Kim-Tec until his retirement in 1986. He worked hard at any endeavor and especially relished fine-tuning the process of producing maple syrup. He also operated his own roto-tilling business covering numerous areas of Appleton. Clarence met Rosella Gutschow at the Cinderella Ballroom and they spent many unforgettable hours there dancing, especially the polka. After a brief courtship, they were married on September 30, 1967, and the marriage formed a solid partnership. Rosella was a dedicated but determined wife, and once convinced a reluctant Clarence to buy an RV. As a result, together they enjoyed travelling through much of the southern and western United States and throughout Canada, including a memorable trip to Alaska. He was an avid photographer and undoubtedly has more photos than can be counted. Their adventures often included their close friends, John and Janice Bark. Another of the couple's favorite pastimes was fishing for pan fish, especially during the years at their home on Shawano Lake. Clarence and Rosella were long-time members of Appleton's Faith Lutheran Church, and were regular participants in the Senior Bible Study Group. Clarence continued active participation in the group following Rosella's untimely passing in 2010. He also enjoyed listening to Christian Radio on a daily basis, a reflection of his deep Christian faith. Although he experienced a serious fall in 2014, following recovery he resumed an active life at his church, and caring for his home until the last month before his death. He is survived by two sisters, Myrtle Bouche, Green Bay, WI and Shirley Buser, Heber Springs, Arkansas; a special niece, Denice Golden, who provided loving support as his caregiver; several nieces, two nephews, and other relatives, friends, and helpful neighbors. In addition to his parents and his wife, he was predeceased by a sister, Marian Steinfeldt and several brothers-in-law. A celebration of Clarence's life is scheduled for 11 am on Monday, September 12, 2016 at Faith Lutheran Church, 601 E. Glendale Ave., Appleton, with Rev. Dan Thews officiating. Visitation is at the church from 9 am until the time of the service. Burial will take place after the service at Highland Memorial Park in Appleton. Memorials may be given to the Faith Lutheran Radio Ministry or the charity of your choice . Gratitude is expressed to the staff at Heritage House Hospice and the nurses of ThedaCare Hospice for their special care of Clarence in his final days, and to Pastors Kyle Jones and Dan Thews of Faith Lutheran Church.
