  Martin J. Hetzel (Butch) of Hartford was born into Eternal Life with God on July 26, 2017 at the age of 94 years, with his family by his side. He was born in Hartford May 5, 1923, the son of Edwin and Laura (nee Brill) Hetzel. Martin attended St. Kilian School and graduated from Hartford High School in 1941. A lifetime member of St. Kilian parish, Martin filled many volunteer roles throughout his life to the parish. His commitment to his Catholic faith was unwavering.Martin served in the U.S. Army as a Staff Sergeant from 1943-1946, in the China-Burma Theater, stationed primarily in India. Martin was passionate about his community and found many ways to contribute his service to Hartford. Following the war, Martin joined the Hartford Volunteer Fire Department, serving as an active member from 1946-1980. While in the Fire Department, he served various roles, including being the captain of the aerial truck and being a member of the water fighting team. He served as an Alderman on the Hartford City Council for 15 ½ years and further served on various city committees before, during and after that time. Martin has been a charter member and active volunteer at the Hartford V.F.W. Post 8834. Martin has also been an active volunteer and supporter at the Hartford Auto Museum since its inception.Martin was an employee of the US Postal Service in Hartford, starting in 1947 as a city carrier and ultimately advancing to a rural letter carrier for a total career of 36 years until his retirement on December 30, 1983. Martin also provided service to his family with employment as a Butcher and helping with customers at the Baus Meat Market and in employment with the Hartford Booster, delivering rural routes and providing delivery of print materials to the Booster. Martin met the love of his life, Lorraine Martin and they married on June 12, 1948 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Kaukauna. Together they made family the center of their lives. He was the model of faith and commitment to his six surviving children Mike (Kay) of West Bend, Mark (Chris) of Waunakee, Mary Jo Kerke (John) of Berwyn, IL, Robert of LaCrosse, Ann Roy (Tom) of Plymouth, and Paul (Doris) of Milwaukee his beloved grandchildren Becky, Jennifer and Kevin Hetzel , Kate Hodges and Rob Hetzel, Adam and Katie Kerke, Logan, Emma and Isabel Roy, and Claire Hetzel and three great grandchildren, Anya,Ivan, and Charlotte. He is further survived by his sister, Virginia (James) Menzel of West Bend, nieces, nephews, Godchildren, other relatives, and many Hartford friends. Martin was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Raymond and Walter Hetzel, and his sister Gertrude. He will lie in state in the St. Kilian Gathering Space (264 W. State Street Hartford, WI 53027) from 4:00-6:00 PM on Thursday, August 3, 2017. The Hartford Fire Department will pay their respects with a walk through and moment of silence at 5:30 p.m. followed by the Hartford V.F.W. Post 8834.Mass of Resurrection will begin at 6:00 PM with Fr. David LaPlante officiating. Private Interment at the St. Kilian&rsquos Cemetery will be Friday, August 4, 2017.Memorials in Martin's name:to the St. Kilian Maintenance Fund or Renovation Fund (428 Forest Street Hartford, WI 53027) to celebrate Martin commitment to his faith will be appreciated. His family is grateful to God for the gift of sharing Dad with us for 94 years.
