  Hillsdale - William D. "Bill" Steger, 76, of Hillsdale, passed away Saturday, February 24, 2018 at his home after a long battle with cancer. He was born June 19, 1941 in Appleton, Wisconsin to Robert and Barbara (Schreiter) Steger. Bill married Kathleen Peck on September 15, 1975 and she survives. Bill graduated from Northwood University and received his Masters degree from Central Michigan University. He proudly served his country in the United States Army for 23 years from 1960-1983. Bill retired as Sergeant Major and was awarded the Silver Star Medal, three Bronze Star Medals, Air Medal, Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal and the Combat Medical Badge for his service during the Vietnam War. He was also inducted to Hillsdale County Veterans Hall of Fame in 2017. Bill was a hospital administrator formerly employed at Hillsdale Hospital and the Community Health Center of Branch County. He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, the Hillsdale American Legion, the Hillsdale Rotary Club where he was also awarded the Paul Harris Fellow and a former member of the Kiwanis Club. Bill was an avid golfer and enjoyed being a member and former board member of the Hillsdale Golf and Country Club. In addition to his wife, Kathleen Steger, Bill is survived by a daughter, Angelika Steger of Appleton, Wisconsin; four sisters, Ann Carr, Kris (Edward) Muntner, Barbara Hiler and Laura Steger; and two brothers, John (Mary) Steger and Paul Steger. Bill was preceded in death by his parents; one sister in infancy, Virginia Marie Steger; and two brothers-in-law, Dr. Robert Carr and Jerome Hiler. A celebration of life for William "Bill" Steger will take place at a later date. Arrangements are entrusted to VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale. Memorial contributions are suggested to Hillsdale Hospital, Hospice of Hillsdale County or the Greater Hillsdale Humane Society.
