  From Elsbernd Family History 20023 Sep 1929 Entered O.S.F. Dubuque, IA. 10 Aug 1935 Final Profession of Vo ws (Sister Myron)Sophia Lutkenhaus was born May 27, 1908, at Festina, Iowa. She was the se cond oldest of the eight children born to John and Anna (Elsbernd) Lutkenh aus, both pioneers of the Festina community. Sophia was baptized May 2 8, 1908, at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Church, Festina and was confirmed Oct ober 30, 1923 by Archbishop James J. Keane.Sophia attended St. Mary's School, Festina, and writes of those years, " We had LaCrosse Franciscans, and I dearly loved Sister Electa Schumacher w ho was my teacher from 2nd through 8th grades."The Lutkenhaus family lived in town where the father of this large fami ly owned a general repair and blacksmith shop. Because she was not need ed at home, Sophia went to work for farm families as a hired girl from t he age of 13 to 21. One of the families who remembers her with affecti on was the Einck family, the family of Father Greg Einck and Sister Mari an Einck, OSF.When her sister, Marie, secretly decided to enter the convent, Sophie, acc ording to a letter, exclaimed, "Why didn't she tell me? I want to go, too !" Convincing her parents that she was serious was not easy, but she fina lly won them over.Greatly impressed by the beautiful reception ceremonies which they attend ed that spring at Mount St. Francis, the two girls decided to enter the co nvent on September 3, 1929. Both were received April 22, 1930. First prof ession was made August 11, 1932, and final profession was August 10, 1935.After having taken the name Sister Myron, Sophia was sent as a senior novi ce to Sugar Creek where she taught 4th, 5th, and 6th grades. In August 1 934, Sister was sent to St. Mary's Home to "take charge of the girls." Af ter teaching a year at Earlville, Sister Myron went to Loras College to wo rk for ten years in the domestic department. Later assignments in homemak ing were Alton, Waterloo, LeMars, Larchwood, Remsen, Holy Family Hall, Cor pus Christi, Mary of the Angels, and Mount St. Francis. Sister Myron reti red in 1977 to Mount Saint Francis, and in 1993 went to Holy Family Hall.Of a steady and even disposition, Sister Myron was described as a "very co mfortable" person to know. Referred to by her sisters as "real" and "unaf fected," as a "good example of a Franciscan," Sister is remembered as easi ly accepting all persons and being, in turn, accepted by all. Because h er sisters felt welcome in her kitchen, that place soon became "the hea rt of the house" wherever she was the homemaker.A famous story teller in her own right, Sister Myron also enjoyed readin g, especially mysteries. Always ready for a good time, Sister enjoyed a g ame of cards, a picnic, or a good television program. But she also spe nt many hours of her leisure time making quilts for the poor.Sister Myron illustrated by her life the words of the song, "Bloom where y ou are planted." Unprepared as a young novice, she was sent to teac h. In this and in all her later assignments, she brought her gentle presen ce to lighten the lives of those she touched, always blooming where she w as planted.Sister's death was sudden and unexpected, but "the readiness is all," a nd she was certainly ready for the call. At 5:30 p.m. March 8, she did n ot respond to the paging of her name, but answered instead the call of h er Maker.
