I was looking through my Salt Lake notes today and found something new f or myself (grin), and something that might be for you. I had copied off t he pages of a small book, rather really a mere typed list, of St. Mary's C emetery at Breezy Point (Fox Lake) .Title: "Vol. I Dodge Co. Wisconsin Cemetery US/Can 977.582 V3h v.1 I had highlighted all O'Connells. The list appears to be as it appea rs in the cemetery; i.e. sequential.
Here's what's not mine, but I'll pass on just in case :
      O'Connell, John born 1852 died 1940
      " Mary born 1855 died 1908
      " Dennis born 1806 died 1880
      " William born 1844 died 1929
      " Bridget born 1810 died 1883
      " Anna born 1854 died 1925
evidently in another area of the cemetery,
      O'Connell, Honora born 1819 died 1901
      " Edward born 1819 died 1850
Lyon, Mary born 1846 died 1850
      O'Connell Cecilia born 1856 died 1873
      4 Mahoney's, then
      O'Connell, Anna born 1854 died 1924
      " Sarah born 1852 died 1913
While in Salt Lake, I do remember looking at the indexes for the 18 70 census and I believe there was a Dennis O'Connell in Dodge Co. I remem ber wondering if he perhaps be an uncle. However, the name Dennis does n ot show up in any of the 13 children of Simon Peter O'Connell, so it's pro bably not one of the immediate family given names. Here's what the 1870 i ndex shows:O'Connell, Dennis age 65, married, White, B-Pl=IREL, County: Dodge, local e: Fox Lake, Roll: 1710, page: 198I also see a Dennis O'Connell in Dodge Co. in the General Land Office pate nts: http://www.glorecords.blm.gov./However, I think most of the Dennis O'Connell information above relat es to the Dennis O'Connell shown in the 1880 census at Fox LakeThe church record that you asked about was found from Kris Mathies, the ar chives researcher at the Diocese of Green Bay. If you have the locati on and date, she could probably find the Church Death record. Thanks for t he email. Jay Thank you for this very loaded one line tip! Though Catholic mysel f, I hadn't thought about the Diocese having an archivist. Muchas Gracia s! And yes, I do very much have locations and dates that would hopeful ly make any search easier.Do you know if your Dennis was from County Kerry? (as our Simon Peter O'Co nnell was---- I just haven't figured out where yet) Do you remember if t he parish records you obtained had any detail about which townland in Irel and the deceased might be from? I might imagine that it would be helpful to send a donation to t he diocese along with, or in response to a request. Likely, the above O'Connells I've listed are not yours, but I thou ght given the locale, it was better to let you decide. If you have the tim e, I wouldn't mind knowing if any of the O'Connell folks listed above in t he cemetery list are yours; if only for the process of elimination . Or if you come across another stray person seeking a Dennis O'Conne ll at Fox Lake.........It's possible that the cemetery book I quoted above might be of use to y ou if it might contain a cemetery more pertinent to Oak Grove.
Thanks again, Cheryll Blevins in New Mexico
Date: 9/30/2003 9:16:18 AM Pacific Standard Time From: spotblev@earthlink. net Jay--- If you might remember me, I am researching O'Connells in Dod ge Co., WI. I recently received an index page from an index of wills a nd other legal documents from Dodge Co. Some of the O'Connells I suspe ct or know for sure are mine, but I also suspect that some may be your s. I'd be glad to send along to you the index page; it is in only pho tocopy form, so it would have to be snail mail. I think it might be of he lp to you, and you could also tell me your 'folks' on it perhaps, and I 'd do the same. I was very pleased to obtain, via the help of this in dex, a will for my gggrandfather Simon O'Connell from the Register in Prob ate in Juneau.Let me know if you could be so kind,Thanks, Cheryll

From Tom TuriffHi Jay, Thanks for all the info. I appreciate it.Unfortunately I know nothing of the "other" O'Connell family. My mother doesn't either.I have had some success in tracking Denis O'Connell. The biggest bre ak I got was from the obituary of one of his son's, James. I am attachi ng it for your reference. I think you'll get a kick out of it. It ga ve me the approximate time they came to the US and when they moved to Wisc onsin. Both Clyman and Juneau are in Dodge County, not Juneau County. I c ouldn't establish that they ever lived in Clyman, only their daughter Cath erine, whose wedding announcement you sent me. I don't know where or wh en they resided in Iowa, do you? Isn't the Civil War story wild? The tombstone for Mary and Denis verifies that they were born in County Li merick, Ireland. It also shows the parish for each of them, but it is ve ry hard to read. An Irish priest at the Abbey here in De Pere got me a li st of parishes in the Kilmallock Diocese. Form a chalk rubbing of the sto ne, I can get close to the parish names on the list, but not exactly...a c ouple letters are very hard to read and the parishes listed on the stone c ould be mispelled. My next step is to write to Ireland for any addition al information that might be available. This is probably a long shot. Fr om a Civil War register listing Charles, Denis' son, Denis' father is Char les. Per Mary Ryan O'Connell's death certificate, her parents are James R yan and Mary Gleason.Have you had any luck in finding these people in census records? For t he 1850 census, I have found them in Chicopee Falls, MA. They are list ed in the Town of Oak grove census in 1880. I cannot find them in eith er the 1860 or 1870 US census. The 1665 was destoyed. I sure would li ke to find them in the 1860 census. It would give me good handle on the ir children. Thanks for your help.I hope you had a good Christmas. My second round beg ins Monday when my son and his family will be here.
I have copies of James O'Connell's muster records. He enlisted in 1si W is Cavalry, Co. B on Nov.11, 1864. He was later transferred to 2nd brigad e, Wilson's Cavalry. I haven't sent for the pension records because he is n't a direct ancestor. I did it for both of my Great parents on the Turr iff side. A lot of paper but not much info in them--mostly fighting wi th the gov't to get their pensions increased. The cost is $35 eac h. I do have a copy of his biographical sketch from a Civil War boo k. It is two pages long and is somewhat interesting. Let me know if y ou want a copy of it. It states that his wife's brother, John Cox also se rved in the civil war and there is a sketch available for him. I will lo ok get a copy of it at the library and send it you, if you'd like.
3/14/2004 Hi Jay,I went to the Juneau courthouse yesterday and look ed up the probate reference you gave me for Denis O'Connell. It was the t ransfer of his 12 acres after his death. I found out he had two more chil dren that I didn't know about. Now I have some more searching to do. O ne daughter was in Farley, Iowa. I also stopped in the cemetery at Fox La ke and took pictures of the graves of Cheryll Blevins' Dennis O'Connell f or her. I'm sending them to her over the next several days. 17 pictures w on't fit in one email. I'm sure she'll be happy to get them.Tom

In many places his given name is Dennis, but his tombstone inscripti on is Denis.
In an article on page 257 of his son Charles' biography in "Soldiers' a nd Citizens' Album of Biographical Record" it states that his father's na me is Charles.
