Biography	As far as is known, Alois' father, Francis, was an Army Officer. They settled in an area of southwestern Wisconsin, as it reminded them of their former home in Prussia. Alois was 4 when he came to the US in 1837 with his family. When Francis first arrived, he worked on the Erie Canal. At 21, in 1855, Alois signed an intention to become a citizen. Alois apprenticed to a stonemason in Mineral Point, and he and Elizabeth Burkhardt were married. In 1875 he bought a farm 2 miles south of town. Being a stonemason, he built a stone house on it. With the help of sons Joseph and Conrad, Alois cut sandstone from the bluffs on the farm to build the house and barns. The girls did the farming. Only German was spoken at home. Retired, in 1899, he moved the family back to Mineral Point. He was an affable man with outsiders, but very stern, obstinate and difficult to live with at home. The Schaumbergs were a tough family being very healthy and strong. They also were strong minded and set in their ways. His name is also seen spelled Alois, documents with his signature use that form. Some of the family called him Aloysius.
Family History Researcher	Dear Jay,I have taken the info you sent and inserted the corrections, additions,changes; thought it would be easier that way. For starters his name isAlois, I got that off his death certificate and certificate of citizensh ipintention. I suspect he might have been called Aloysius, but that wasn't h isformal name. You do see both names used in descendants. He was a stonemason/dairy farmer.
