Lueck, Kathleen "Katie" (Maloney) Kathleen "Katie" Lueck, age 80, passed away at her home on Thursday, Febru ary 23, 2006. She was born May 29, 1925, in Rhinelander, Wisconsin, the da ughter of the late Thomas and Margaret (Schmidt) Maloney. Katie was a life long resident of Appleton and a 1943 graduate of Appleton High School. Fol lowing graduation, she became a secretary for the Appleton Chamber of Comm erce. On December 28, 1949, she married Bob Lueck. Katie was a devout Catholic and was a charter member of St. Thomas More Pa rish. Katie was the "number one" volunteer at the fledgling parish, fir st as the secretary at the St. Thomas More rectory and then when the scho ol was completed, she became the first secretary of the St. Thomas More Sc hool. The nuns, students, and her own children loved having her at the h ub of the school, running the day-to-day operations in the office. Once h er own children graduated, Katie went on to become a vocational secreta ry for the Appleton Area School District for over 20 years. Katie was an intelligent, kind and fun-loving woman, whose courage and str ength were greatly admired. She was extremely proud of her Irish heritag e; St. Patrick's Day was her favorite day of the year. She was a wonderf ul and reliable friend, with many friendships that spanned over 60-70 year s. Katie had a special talent for writing poetry. Key milestones of fami ly and friends were commemorated with cleverly written poems. Katie lov ed to cook and entertain and her house was always filled with family and f riends at all the holidays. She also enjoyed playing bridge, line dancin g, gardening and talking on the phone. Her favorite spot in the world w as her own kitchen table where she would look out into her backyard and ma rvel at all the beautiful birds feeding at her bird feeder. She will be deeply missed by her children: Lynn (Timothy) VanSusteren a nd their children Claire, Katherine, and Peter; Nancy (Jim) Emslie and the ir children Allie and Michael; and Steve (Bonnie) Lueck and their childr en Patrick, Emily, and Ben (Toni); and great-grandchildren Styles and Cas h. In addition to her parents, Katie was preceded in death by her husband B ob in 1994, her daughter Susan in 1986, and her brother Jim. The Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated 11 a.m. Monday, February 27 th at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, corner of McDonald and Glendale Sts ., Appleton, with Fr. Gerald Falk officiating. Interment will take pla ce at St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call at the Brettschneider-Trettin- Lederer Funeral Chapel from 5-7 p.m. Sunday and then directly at the chur ch from 9:30 a.m. Monday until the time of the service. The parish pray er service will be at 7 p.m. Sunday. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established. Her children would like to thank Affinity Hospice, especially Rachel Schro eder RN, and the special family members and friends for the loving care th ey provided our mother.
