  Virginia Mae Schmidt, 89 years old of Appleton, WI, entered into the kingdom of heaven while visiting her family in Denver, CO on March 18, 2014. Virginia was born on March 28, 1924 in Tigerton, WI to the late Peter Brahan and Anna (Hoffman) Brahan. Virginia has joined her true love and dance partner, Birger, who preceded her in death just last October. They were blessed with 71 years of marriage, beginning on Valentine's Day, 1942. Virginia's true calling in life was Motherhood. She bravely followed her military husband across country with children in tow to begin a life devoted to her family. She was a baker, seamstress, nurse, peacekeeper, teacher all rolled into one remarkable woman. Her passions included family, friends, fishing, playing those one arm bandits, teaching her children about the Lord and flaunting her proud title of the "card witch". No one ever went hungry at her table. She could cook anything the kids brought home and her doughnuts were legendary. When Birger and Virginia took the dance floor magic happened. If you looked up motherhood in the dictionary you would find her name listed first. She raised her children to be loving, caring adults, another tribute to honor her name. Virginia will be sadly missed by her 10 children and their spouses: Patricia and Michael Hulke, Appleton; Robert and Judith Schmidt, Appleton; Sandra DeBruin, Appleton; James and Brenda Schmidt, Kaukauna; William Schmidt, Eau Claire; Elizabeth and James Van Bommel, Fond du Lac; Joseph and Bethlehem Schmidt, Lakewood, CO; Paul and Cindy Schmidt, Appleton; Donald and Heather Schmidt, Aurora, CO; Randall and Heidi Schmidt, Appleton; her 103 grandchildren: 41 grandchildren; 53 great grandchildren; and 9 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her brothers and sisters; and her son in-law; Maurie DeBruin. A celebration of her life will take place on her birthday at St. Pius X, 500 W. Marquette Street, Appleton. Friends may visit at the church on Friday, March 28th from 9:30am until 11:15am. Mass and luncheon to follow. Though she will be sadly missed by her family they are grateful to have Birger and Virginia joined again to continue their journey together. "Irish eyes are smiling."
