Cemetery History - Efforts to create a town cemetery began September 9, 1873. Village officers bought two and a half acres from John and Sarah Caveno for the sum of $5.00. Apparently it took some time to clear the land, fence it and lay out the plots, for the earliest recorded purchase of a plot in the Riverside Cemetery was 14 years late. Lot N-23 was sold to Jacob Rech on October 29, 1887. The deed is recorded in the cemetery records by John Grosse, Justice of the Peace.
These old records offer an interesting insight on surveying in those early times. To quote one example: Commencing from a starting point witnessed by a hemlock 14 inches in diameter, South 6 degrees, West 19 links to be found as following by measuring from the corners of Section 23, 24, 25, etc.
The job of clearing the land, building a fence and making a road was ___ to Hugh Erley for the sum of $222.50. Lumber for the fence was purchased at John Grosse's General Store in January 1878 for the sum of $12.21. In 1886, part of the fence was destroyed by forest fires and had to be repaired. A new road was also laid leading to the cemetery from the west. One can almost see those early pioneers gathered about on the top of the windswept hill surrounded by woods as they laid to rest a member of the community.
In April, 1887, the town board hired Eugene Fitzpatrick to survey the cemetery and lay it out in lots. The record states, make a plat thereof. The job took Fitzpatrick 15 days, for which he was paid $4.00 a day. In addition, for his lodging and 17 meals, the town paid out $4.50. He was assisted in his surveying by James and Thomas Burns, Joseph Smith and Julien DeMaiffe, each of whom was paid $1.50 a day for labor.
Although the records fail to indicate the early charge for a cemetery lot, they were apparently dirt cheap. The price as late as 1950 was $5.00 per five grave lots.
For many years after the cemetery was opened, it was customary for Protestant burials to be made in the north half which Catholic burials took place in the south half. No one seems to know how long this practice continued, but it was apparently a gradual discontinuance and, in some cases of a mixed marriage, husband and wife were buried in adjoining graves.
On July 6, 1887, Charles Hall of Oconto was paid $19.60 for six days labor cutting 784 numbers to designate the lots in the cemetery. On December 6th of that year, Richard L. Hall was paid $6.50 for making and platting map of cemetery for the Town of Little Suamico.
In 1944 the cemetery was expanded by purchasing two additional acres of land from Miles and Olive Falenstein, but it was not until July 1954 that this section was surveyed and platted. An additional eight acres was bought from Steven and Josephine Wnuk in September, 1965. This section, however, still remains to be improved and platted.
In 1967 the Riverside Cemetery Association was formed and on January 12th the first annual meeting was held at the Little Suamico Town Hall. Members of the first board were Asa Foster, Frank Race, Daniel Koehne, Robert Rost, Douglas Allen, Joseph Kawula and Harold Marks.
The very old cemetery (Section A) includes Lots N-1 to N-96 and Lots S-101 to S-96. Lot N-1 starts in the northeast corner and the numbers run wet, then east with Lot N-96 in the far southwest corner. Potters Field adjourns Section A on the southwest. There are possibly seven or eight people buried in Potters Field but we have the records for only two.
Section B is to the east of the old cemetery and is completely developed. Section C was platted about one year ago and is to the west of the old cemetery. This cemetery was last updated on 12/31/2009.
