Henry passed away at his sister's home in Antigo. He was survived by 8 of 15 children; George of Pullman, Washington; Edgar of Neopit, Jennie Morin of Big Falls, Minnesota; Noah and Abel of Hadley, and Mrs. William Close and Jean of Antigo.
Henry, a native of northern Canada, was a former resident of Minnesota At age 4 months he moved with his family to Kaukauna, Wisconsin. He met Mary Langloise in Green Bay, Wisconsin and soon married her. After several moves, Henry and his wife settled in Minnesota and raised their family.

Prime Times History: Father St. Louis led first Mass in Deleglise cabin

(Editor's note: It was 80 years ago this spring, in May, 1932 that Antigo residents gathered for the formal dedication of the Deleglise cabin on the grounds of what was then the Antigo Public Library. The Antigo Daily Journal covered the event in a series of articles that looked at the program, the Deleglise family and the history of the cabin. This is an abridged version of a paper by Luke Leiterman read at dedication.)

To us assembled here, this log cabin with the tablet it now bears, tells two stories, - the one about itself as the first dwelling in Antigo, and the other with this cabin as the scene of the first Holy Mass to be celebrated here. We wish to deal with the latter, and more particularly with the life and labors of the Reverend Philip St. Louis who brought the first spiritual consolations of the Catholic religion to the Catholic settlers of this community.

Father St. Louis
Philip St. Louis, the youngest of 12 children of Ephraim and Marie St. Louis, was born on April 15, 1848, at Little Chute. His studies were made under the Jesuit Fathers in Milwaukee and also under the guidance of the Servite Fathers who had established their first American home on Doty Island at Menasha in the summer of 1870. He later became a professed religious in that community and was the first Servite priest to be ordained in America. He was ordained to the priesthood on April 7, 1876, by Bishop Krautbauer of Green Bay, this being the first time since his elevation to the episcopate that the prelate had been called upon to perform that duty.

Drew Plans for Monastery
In the following September Father St. Louis went to Chicago, and while there drew the plans and superintended the erection of the Servite monastery in that city, and the church at Cicero. In May, 1879, while on a visit to Little Chute from Chicago, Father St. Louis undertook a visit to relatives who had previously settled at Phlox , and on this occasion administered to the spiritual wants of the people. In an older letter to a local resident, Father St. Louis writes of this visit: "I came here (that is, to Phlox) for the first time in the month of May, 1879, and said Mass in Mr. Joseph St. Louis' old log house. I left Little Chute in the train and went as far as Clintonville (at that time the northern limit of the railroad) and there took a team and wagon and drove to Phlox. It took us two days and had to sleep in the woods.''

Call To The North
Just what induced Father St. Louis to direct his thoughts to a rather permanent life of labor in northern Wisconsin may be read in his own words: He writes: "I thought I was tired, - tired in body and in mind - attending a congregation 10 miles from Chicago, building a church and large convent, looking to the masons and carpenters, working until midnight drawing plans, and, without explanations. I was sacristan, treasurer, and procurator; work and responsibility weighed heavily upon me. A man strong in mind and body could have borne it, but not I. Perhaps it was a want of will...but...I thought I was tired.''
Consequently, early in 1880, Father St. Louis was transferred from Chicago to the Servite monastery on Doty Island, Menasha.

First Mass in Antigo
In April, 1880 Father St. Louis made his second visit to Phlox. Having heard of the Antigo settlement he journeyed thither on foot and on May 2, 1880, within the walls of this humble cabin, he celebrated the first Holy Mass in this community.

Picture to yourselves that memorable event: Father St. Louis in youthful priestly enthusiasm entering the settlement with a pack on his back containing the necessary vestments and articles for the celebration of Mass; the greeting and warm reception at the door of the Deleglise cabin; the preparations, and finally the Mass itself. All unnecessary furniture was removed from the cabin, benches improvised, a large bureau converted into an altar, and even a volunteer choir led by a young bride sang the Mass without the aid of accompaniment.

A true missionary zeal led Father St. Louis to seek permission to visit the scattered Catholics at Phlox and Antigo, whom he attended monthly for the next two years from Menasha. Neither bad roads and cold weather, nor the drawbacks of a none too robust constitution kept Father St. Louis from his missionary labors.

Account of Experiences
The truly heroic zeal and determined effort of Father St. Louis on such occasions is aptly exemplified in the following account from his own pen, wherein he describes his experience on a trip from Appleton to Phlox. "I left Appleton on Friday on the train and went as far as Eland Junction. Thence I walked to Birnamwood, there being no railroad then, and slept there at Mr. McDermott's boarding camp. It was a stormy night and there was fear that some trees would be blown down on the camp. In the morning the weather was raw, and a cold rain was drizzling.

The McDermott family tried hard to detain me from going to Phlox on that day, (a distance of 24 miles), but Mass had to be said at Phlox on Sunday; I was determined to go. The kind woman lent me a short but waterproof cloak which was found of great service. With this cloak and my bundle I started on the surveyor's line for the right-of-way of the Lake Shore railroad, and at about 10 o'clock I reached the place, where is now the village of Elmhurst.

There, seeing the marks of the Government survey on a tree, and thereby knowing that Phlox could be reached by traveling straight east, I turned to the direction. By that time the rain had turned into snow, and it was falling thick and fast; I was soaked clear through my clothing except the shoulders protected by the welcome cloak. It was no easy task to keep in the right direction; a small compass in my possession was not working on account of being soaked with water.'' ...Having entered a large swamp and "advanced a short distance I took the pocket compass, shook it, and bit it, trying to take out the crystal, and finally lost in the snow and moss. It was a thoughtful moment: wet and cold, without matches to light fire, and the probability of passing the night in such a place.

The swamp seemed endless, in fact I did not cross it, but followed it in all its length, having arrived, after four hours traveling, half a mile out of my way. I had traveled at the rate of one mile per hour. I now found a settler, and from there was a road to Phlox, where I arrived after dark.''

Later years
When the Antigo mission was given over to Father Lochman of Clintonville in the summer 1882, Father St. Louis took up his residence at Phlox and continued his labors there for the next 11 years. Here he organized St. Joseph parish, erected the church, and opened the parochial school.

In September, 1893, Father St. Louis moved to the St. Joseph Orphanage at Green Bay and later to the Immaculate Conception parish at Florence, the duties of which he assumed on Oct. 10, 1895.

In 1899 he was transferred to St. Patrick's parish at Lebanon. Two years later he took charge of Holy Cross parish at Mischicot, where he remained until he was transferred to St. Patrick's parish at Stiles, in Oconto County in 1909. From this place he attended a station at Abrams, also in Oconto County.

Father St. Louis health was failing rapidly and in 1914, he repaired to Colorado Springs, Colo.

During Holy Week and on Easter Sunday, 1928, he assisted at the services held in St. Mary's church at Colorado Springs. On Easter Monday he was taken ill. For six weeks he lingered between life and death, but finally on May 25, following a heart attack, at the advanced age of 80 years, the angel of death called him to his Maker Almighty God had granted his oft repeated wish "To die in the harness, serving his Master until the end.''

His mortal remains were interred in the priest's lot in the Evergreen cemetery at Colorado Springs. The memory of him, however, was not interred with his bones, for many people are now wont to speak of him as that "wonderful old man,'' or "dear old saint,'' for such he truly was.

Obituary:
Mrs. Chrestean Maher, 83, daughter of pioneer Kaukauna residents, died at her home, route 1, Kaukauna, about 7:15 this morning. She had been ill several months. The daughter of Alexander Grignon, one of the early residents of this section, she was born July 24, 1866, in Combined Locks and lived in that vicinity all her life. Her mother, Philomene St. Louis Grignon was the first white child born in Kaukauna and her grandfather, Ephraim St. Louis, built the government canal between Combined Locks and Little Chute. Mrs. Maher was a member of Holy Cross church and the Happy Death society, Jusus church, Milwaukee. Survivors are two sons, John, Appleton, and James, Lake Charles, La.: four daughters, the Misses Eleanor and Agnes and Mrs Vida Garber, Milwaukee, and Miss Isabelle, Kaukauna; three brothers, Robert Grignon, Munsing, Mich., Thomas Grignon, Toronto, Canada; and James Grignon, Kaukauna; two sisters. Mrs. Delia McKenzie, Portland, Oregon and Mrs. Florence Oberley, Minneapolis, Minn; three grandchildren and a great-granchild. Friends may call at Fargo's Funeral home, Kaukauna, after 8 o'clock Wednesday evening. The rosary will be recited at 8 o'clock on Wednesday and Thursday nights. After the cortege forms at the funeral home at 9 o'clock Friday morning, services will be at 9:30 at Holy Cross church, Kaukauna, with the Rev. Andrew Quella in charge. Burial will be at Highland Memorial park, Appleton.

Wilfred Martin "Bill" DeBroux, 86, passed away on Tuesday, November 3, 2015, in Battle Creek, Michigan.
Bill was born the oldest of 14 children to Ralph and Gertrude (Dietrich) DeBroux on May 10, 1929 in Kaukauna, Wisconsin. In 1977 he married the love of his life, Maureen "Mo" (Mosel) at the Little Brown Church in Iowa and began his life in Michigan.
Bill proudly served in the Air National Guard for 38 years, beginning at Truax Field in Madison, WI and then transferring to Battle Creek, MI where he retired in 1989 as Chief Master Sergeant. Following retirement, he drove school bus for Lakeview School District and was a ranger at Cedar Creek and Marywood Golf Courses. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Battle Creek and St. Mary's Catholic Church in Marshall. Bill enjoyed spending time with his friends and family, golfing, bowling, working on his lawn, watching game shows and meeting new people. He had a smile and hug for everyone.
He is survived by his children Mindy L. (Troy) Meyers of Chicago and Jason M. (Heather) Meyers of Battle Creek; siblings: Melvin DeBroux, Leonard (Vonnie) Debroux, Leroy (Diana) DeBroux, Carl (Jan) DeBroux, Richard (Jean) DeBroux, Ronald (Carol) DeBroux, Norman (Marge) DeBroux, Molly Fink, Sharon (Jim) Lettau, Charlotte (Adam) Berg, Pat DeBroux, Aunt Germaine Blair and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. Obituary:
LaVerne Forster passed away Saturday morning, April 18, 2015 at the St. Paul Home in Kaukauna. LaVerne was born June 22, 1930 to Ralph and Gertrude (Diedrich) DeBroux. LaVerne married Conrad Forster on September 17, 1949 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Kaukauna.
LaVerne was a lifelong resident of Kaukauna and member of Holy Cross Parish. She was an active community volunteer and entrepreneur, but her greatest pride was her family. She dearly loved her children and grandchildren.
LaVerne was the oldest daughter in a family of fourteen children. She was very proud to complete high school even though she had many responsibilities helping out at home with her siblings. LaVerne was a very proud Kaukauna High School graduate and in 2013 was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award at the annual alumni rally.
LaVerne was active in her community, serving on the town board in the Town of Vandenbroek for many years. She was an active member of Holy Cross Parish in Kaukauna, volunteering in numerous ways over the years. In the 1970's, LaVerne led a guitar group at Holy Cross called the Friendship Singers. She became involved in community theatre by sewing costumes for her granddaughters who performed in local productions. Soon LaVerne was costuming shows for Kaukauna High School, Kaukauna Community Players, and KCSS' Bravo. She was inducted into the KHS/KCP Hall of Fame in recognition of her efforts. LaVerne knitted hundreds of pairs of "grandma mittens" which she gave to family and to many community organizations.
A true entrepreneur, LaVerne started several tax preparation businesses. Along with Doug Bennett, LaVerne founded the National Association of Tax Professionals (NATP), an organization that still thrives today. She taught tax seminars to tax preparers in all 50 states and London, England. She was a proud Enrolled Agent and served on national IRS committees in Washington D.C.
Family was everything to LaVerne. We are blessed to have been guided by her example. She taught us to work hard, appreciate education, and love fiercely. LaVerne is survived by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren: Conrad, Jr. and Linda Forster of Mukwonago, WI and their children Brett and Kelly Forster (Ethan, Brandon, and Lucas), Craig and Laura Forster (Drew, Jacob, Nolan and baby due in June), and Kyle and Kristen Forster; Rick and Kim Forster of Long Lake, WI; Allison and Tom Mischler and their children Kacie and Kevin Bass and Logan Mischler; and John and Carrie Forster and their children Jessica (fiancé Rusty Bower) Forster and Alex Forster.
LaVerne is further survived by her siblings and their spouses: Bill DeBroux, Mel DeBroux, Len and Von DeBroux, Lee and Diana DeBroux, Carl and Jan DeBroux, Reg and Jean DeBroux, Ron and Carol DeBroux, Norm and Marge DeBroux, Pat DeBroux, Molly Fink, Char and Adam Berg, and Sharon and Jim Lettau.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Conrad Forster, Sr. in 2002; her infant brother, Donny; her sister, Ione Burton; sisters-in law Maureen DeBroux and Audrey DeBroux; and brothers-in-law Francis Burton and Bob Fink.
We will celebrate LaVerne's life with a visitation on Tuesday, April 21, 2015 from 4:00 to 6:30 p.m. at the FARGO FUNERAL HOME, 400 W. Wisconsin Avenue, Kaukauna, followed by a prayer service at 6:30 at the funeral home. The Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 22, 2015, at HOLY CROSS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 309 Desnoyer Street, Kaukauna, with Fr. Tom Pomeroy officiating. Ione graduated from Kaukauna High School and was married to her loving husband, Francis Burton, on October 21, 1950. She was a dedicated housewife and mother and belonged to Homemakers. Ione was also a charter member of the St. Bernard Catholic Church in Appleton. She enjoyed playing cards with family and friends, as well as her overnight casino trips, going up to the cottage as often as possible and bowling on her couple's league. Ione was also a devoted Packer fan and enjoyed her Christmas "girl's shopping weekend" with her daughters. Ione just loved life as long as she was with her loved ones.

Theodore was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War. He loved spending time with his cats, family and granddaughter.

William "Lefty" Geurts Jr., Little Chute, age 86, passed away at home after an extended illness on Wednesday March 11, 2015. He was born in Freedom on May 12, 1928 to the late William and Marie Geurts. Following his 1945 graduation from Freedom High School, Lefty enlisted in the Navy. He was honorably discharged in 1948 and continued to serve for 5 years in the Naval Reserve. Lefty owned and operated the Star Lite Club from 1960-1999. He was a charter member and past president of the Freedom Lions Club. Lefty married Joan Diedrich on November 10, 1982. Lefty was one of the kindest most generous people. He loved to spend time at the cottage on Shawano Lake. He adored his grandkids. His favorite past time was attending grandkids sporting events and watching the girls Pom & Dance. Lefty also liked spending time with friends Rodney and Charlie at the Dog Track. One of his favorite places was Our Lady of Refuge Shrine. He loved the Murphy's and how their prayer group met each week for prayer and breakfast.
William is survived by his wife of 32 years, Joan; daughters: Lori Wojtowicz and Lisa (Scott) Secor; son Terry (friend Karen) Geurts; step children: Cheryl (Greg) Deering, Cindy (Keith) Gonnering, Terry and Greg Diedrich; grandchildren: Marcus (friend Bree) and Matt Wojtowicz, Ashley (fiancée Ricky) and Travis (friend Leah) Secor, Crystal (friend Vang), Kevin (Annie), Brian, Shawn and Tony Geurts; step grandchildren: Tyler, Troy, Tanner (friend Rhianna) and Trent Deering, Maria, Lizzy and Steph Gonnering; great grandchildren: Maverick, Chase, Kayden, Bernice, William and Hailee; siblings: Joyce Nackers, Ves (Angie) Geurts and Jane (Don) Coffey; sisters and brothers-in-law: Ione (friend Dean) Geurts, Dolores (Duane) Vanderloop, Tom (Muggs) Dercks, Clara, Myra and Bernice (friend Jim) Dercks; and good friends: Ione and Jack Ashauer, Wanda and Tom Vanstiphout, Evie and Dick Frederickson, Donna and Dave Dolittle, Rodney Wendt and Charlie Weller; neighbors Betty and Guy Senso; and special little friend Taylor Gloudemann. Joan (Geurts) Bowers, Reno, Nevada, died Wednesday, February 12, 2014. Joan was born September 5, 1931, to the late William and Marie (Kortz) Geurts. She was married to Harvey Bowers May 20, 1952, at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, Freedom. Harvey passed away March 12, 1964.
Joan was a resident of Freedom and a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church until she moved to Reno, Nevada, in 1989 to be with her daughter, Ellen.
Joan is survived by daughter, Dr. Ellen Bowers McBride and son-in-law, Darren McBride of Reno, Nevada. Her grandchildren, Meredith, Samantha, Jaclyn, and Christopher McBride also from Reno.
She is also survived by her twin sister, Jane and Donald Coffey, Joyce Nackers, brothers, Ves and Ange Geurts, Bill (Lefty) and Joan Geurts;. sisters-in-law, lone Geurts, Rose Mary Greiner, and Helen Dachelet; brothers-in-law, Daniel (Elaine) and Glenn Bowers. Also many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by brother, Tom Geurts, brother-in-law, Howard Nackers, sister-in-law, Rita Geurts. Besides her husband, Harvey, his parents, John and Ann Bowers, brothers-in-law, Vernon Bowers, Carl Greiner and Bill Dachelet and sister-in-law, Joyce Broeren.

Marvin G. (Otts) Van Deraa, Kaukauna, age 79, passed away peacefully Thursday morning, September 8, 2011. He was born on February 12, 1932 in Combined Locks to the late John and Bertha (Kortz) Van Deraa. He married Kathleen (Toots) Hartzheim at St. Therese Parish on May 4, 1957 and he was still well enough to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with his family in 2007.
Otts was an Army veteran who served during the Korean War and remained a member of the American Legion Post 258. He worked 43 years at Thilmany Pulp & Paper as an oiler in the maintenance department and was a member of the Quarter Century Club, retiring in 1994. Otts enjoyed playing Sheephead, fishing, hunting, listening and dancing to polka music, and spending time with his family. He was a member of Holy Cross Parish in Kaukauna. Otts is survived by his wife of 54 years, Kathleen; children: David (Sharon Marquardt), Brillion; Sharon (Brett) Miller, Appleton; Brian, Appleton; and Dyan (Jamie) Borts, Milwaukee; grandchildren: Jenny and Kalin Van Deraa, Kate and Laura Miller and Brandon Borts; great grandchildren: Ailey, Zoey and Ava; brothers and sisters: Harvey (Irene), Ellie Walker, Butch (Ruth), Rutz (Beth), Geraldine Welch, and Gerald; and brothers and sisters-in-law: Irene (Floyd) Van Asten, Bobbye Hartzheim, James (Margie) Hartzheim, Dorothy Kons, Mike (Kathy) Hartzheim, Liz Downey, Lu Kostan, Rose (R.D.) Pege (Gerald) A. Van Deraa, Little Chute, age 72, died Tuesday December 24, 2013 at Brewster Village. He was born in Little Chute on February 16, 1941 to the late John and Bertha (Kortz) Van Deraa. Following graduation, Gerald served in the U.S. Army. Pege was a computer programmer and retired from M&I Bank after 30 years with them. He loved to visit with his brothers and sisters and will be warmly remembered for his "honks" hello. The Chicago Cubs are in mourning as they have lost their most loyal fan.
Gerald is survived by his siblings: his twin sister Geraldine "Gerry" Welch, Appleton; Ronald (Beth), Neenah; Ellie Walker, Little Chute; Harvey (Irene), Kimberly; and Larry (Ruth), Poy Sippi; special nephew Dan Vanevenhoven; and sister-in-law: Kathleen Van Deraa. Freedom - Leroy T. Kortz, age 77, of Freedom, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 24, 2018. He was born on February 21, 1941, son of the late Herman and Lillian (Carney) Kortz.
After high school, Leroy served as a Sergeant in the Marine Corps Reserves. He was a 50 year member of the Local 955, being a carpenter by trade. His love of working with wood, resulted in building his own home. He always had a project he was working on and could fix just about anything.
Leroy was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed nature walks through his land, fishing and hunting, especially his trips taken out west. Leroy also enjoyed bowling and was a long time season ticket holder for the Green Bay Packers.
Leroy is survived by his siblings: Glenn Kortz, Mary (Dick) Heindl, Gary (Lois) Kortz and Barb (Tom) Braun; nieces and nephews: Mike (Denise) LeNoble, Todd (Robin) LeNoble, Jean (Steve) Lenz, Tim Heindl (special friend Missy), Jeff Heindl, Brian (Annie Hughes-Heindl), Jason (Ashley) Heindl, Joe (Robyn) Kortz, Chad (Lisa) Kortz, Greg (Bonnie) Kortz, Jeremy Braun, Andy (Stacy) Braun and Laura (Dan) Howard; many great nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
