Obituary:
Funeral for Melvin L. Schwab of McMinnville was held Wednesday afternoon in the chapel of Macy & Son Funeral Directors, McMinnville, with the Rev. Steve Ross of McMinnville United Methodist Church officiating.
Private interment was in Willamette National Cemetery, Portland.
Mr. Schwab died April 24, 2000, in his home. He was 75.
He was born April 16, 1925, in Vernonia, the son of Lee and Clara VanDomelin Schwab. He was raised and educated in Vernonia.
He served in the Navy during World War II. After the war, he returned to Vernonia and worked as a printer for the Vernonia Eagle.
He and Jean Peasnall were married June 1, 1947, in Vernonia.
Mr. Schwab worked for the Eagle for 29 years until its closure. He then was a printer for the Forest Grove News-Times for 12 years. He moved to Aloha in 1976 and retired in 1987. He had lived in McMinnville since 1991. He enjoyed collecting elephant figures. He was an avid woodworker and also loved fishing and camping.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Kathy Leatherwood of Anchorage, Alaska, and Karen Wilder of Clovis, N.M.; two sons, Martin Schwab of Portland and Melvin Schwab of Hillsboro; two sisters, Genevieve Fisher of Vernonia and Lois Theines of The Dalles; a brother, Robert Schwab of The Dalles; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
