    Julius J. Martens, Jr., has returned to Kaukauna after being honorably discharged from the Army on October 10 in Mississippi. Mr. Martin's entered service in April 1942 and served for 3 1/2 years with the air Corps and infantry. He obtained the rank of Master Sgt. He will now assume the management of the Julius J Martens dry goods store, founded and operated by his father until the latter's death in December 1944.,

    Martens, Julius J ohn (Jay)Julius John Martens, Kaukauna, age 92, died Sunday, September 17, 200 6, at St. Paul Elder Services in Kaukauna. He was born July 7, 1914, in Ka ukauna, the youngest of three children born to Julius and Lillian (Mulholl and) Martens. Jay graduated from Nicolet Grade School and Kaukauna High Sc hool. After high school he entered the University of Wisconsin-Madison a nd graduated with a degree in Business Administration and then returned ho me to work in his father's Dry Goods store, J.J. Martens Co., Third Stree t, Kaukauna, WI, where he met his future wife, Geraldine Eve Hentz. In 194 2, he was drafted into the U.S. Army. After basic training at Fort Bennin g, GA, he served as a Master Sergeant in the Finance Department of the ar my in Sioux Falls, SD. On February 11, 1943, he married Geraldine Eve Hent z. In 1945, after his father's death, he received an honorable discharge a nd returned home to manage J.J. Martens Co. He was an active member of t he Kaukauna Chamber of Commerce and the Kaukauna Rotary.Jay and his wife, Gerry, loved nature and the beauty of the Wisconsin woo ds and lakes. Listening to the owls hoot and watching the eagles soar ov er Thousand Islands were some of their greatest joys. One of their favori te pastimes was exploring the Wisconsin woods. Every Sunday throughout t he summer and into the fall, Jay would consult his complete set of Wiscons in county road maps, pack up the wife and four kids, and plan a trip to so me new and unexplored destination. For a week or two each summer, he wou ld rent a cottage on Silver Bass Lake near Rhinelander, WI, where they wou ld, canoe, hike, explore, and read comic books. For breakfast they would h ave cereal topped with wild blackberries that Gerry had picked in the wood s. Jay taught the kids to catch perch and sunfish which Gerry would then c ook for dinner. Killing song birds and frogs in the woods was off-limits t hough - a lesson the three boys learned early in life.Jay's other main interests were science and technology which were also pas sed down to all of his children. After he retired from the store in 197 3, he pursued a new career of tax consulting and became an avid stude nt of computer technology. In the late 1980's, he learned Forth, a program ming language, and used it to develop "DE-BOOKS", a bookkeeping program, w hich was published in the Jan/Feb 1990 issue of FORTH DIMENSIONS magazin e. His love of nature, words of wisdom, and inquisitive mind will be remem bered by many.Jay is survived by four children: Julie Newcombe (Chuck Habeger) of Seattl e, WA; John Martens and his friend Sharon Kilfoy of Madison, WI; Thomas Ma rtens of Appleton, WI; and Michael (wife Cindy Marks) Martens of Portlan d, OR. He is also survived by the following nieces and nephews: Edward You ng of Anchorage, Alaska; John Young of Santa Barbara, CA; Mary (Young) Sac hse of Kohler, WI; William Young of Madison, WI; Donald Rustau of Appleto n, WI; and Mary (Ristau) LaRock of Minneapolis, MN. Jay is also surviv ed by many grand-nieces and grand-nephews.He was recently preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine Eve (Hentz) Marte ns on August 25, 2006, and two sisters, Alice (Martens) Young, and Helen ( Martens) Ristau, and nephew, David Ristau.A visitation will be held for Jay at 10 a.m. followed by a funeral servi ce at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, September 26, 2006, at the Fargo Funeral Home, K aukauna, with Fr. Jerry Pastors officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary 's Cemetery immediately after the service.A memorial fund in Jay and Gerry Martens' name has been established for t he Thousand Islands Environmental Center which promotes the "appreciati on of and involvement in nature by people of all ages."FARGO FUNERAL HOME 400 W.
