    Obituary:
Gary Jule Basten, age 80, died peacefully at home October 18, 2017, with his loving wife by his side, after a heroic journey with Lewy Body Dementia and Parkinsonism. Born November 16, 1936, the only son of Mildred Delveaux and Louis Basten he lived in Green Bay his entire life.
Gary graduated with the Central Catholic Class of 1955 and continued to meet with his classmates every month, reminiscing and sharing stories which were probably embellished a little. An avid sports enthusiast, he lettered in football and baseball. After graduation he enlisted in the Navy and was honorably discharged in 1957.
On May 31, 1958, he married his high school sweetheart, the former Judy Scannell, and enjoyed almost 60 years of marriage. They raised four children who in turn blessed them with ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Faith, family, friends and fun were at the heart of who he was.
The founder of Gary J. Basten Construction Co., he was a successful businessman and contractor who took pride in his workmanship and business ethics. He was a self-made man who knew the meaning of hard work. He treated his customers with respect and fairness, especially the elderly who were dear to his heart, all traits he instilled in his children and grandchildren.
Always wanting to five back to his community, he served on the Ashwaubenon Park Board, Ethics Committee, was President of the Parkview PTA, coached youth football, baseball and hockey and delivered Meals on Wheels.
Gary was the proud sponsor of the oldest slowpitch team in Wisconsin, together for 28 years, whose members formed his support group during his illness called "Afternoons with Gary" and who remain his very dear friends. They, along with their wives, continued to visit, care for and support Gary through his final days.
A faithful servant and charter member of Nativity Parish, he served on the Building and Grounds Committee, was a Confirmation Teacher, choir member, and as a Eucharistic Minister brought Holy Communion to the nursing homes and the homebound.
Gary had the gift of a green thumb as evidenced by his gorgeous garden. He loved traveling, golfing, playing cards, fishing, hunting and spending weekends at the cottage cruising around Wheeler Lake on his pontoon boat with family and friends.
A history buff, he especially loved reading about the Packers, the City of Green Bay and the historical Astor Park area where he fond childhood memories. He was an avid Green Bay Packers fan owning season tickets since 1958 and was one that could truly say he was at the infamous Ice Bowl.
His wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were his greatest joy. You could always find him in the stands cheering them on at their events or sharing their memorable moments as they journeyed through their lives.
Gary is survived by his wife, Judy, who lovingly cared for him at home, daughter Polly (John) Willis, Raleigh, NC; son Andrew (Jane) Basten, Hobart; daughter Julie (Robert) Brocker, Appleton; son Michael (Randi) Basten, Paradise Valley, AZ.
Proud and fun loving grandfather of Drew (Kelli) Basten, Blair (Cali) Basten, Brooke (Tate) McMillan, Jordan Brocker, Cole (Melissa) Brocker, Michaela Brocker, John Taylor Willis, Emily Willis, Logan Basten, Ryder Basten and two great-grandchildren, Elle and Crew McMillan.
He is further survived by his sisters, Mercedes (Denis) Maloney and Jackie Lamberg, MN; sisters-in-law, Nancy Carlson, Sue Smith, Lynn Scannell and brother-in-law Steve Scannell, many nieces, nephews and friends.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents Mildred and Louis Basten, sister Janice Baye, mother and father-in-law Ceilie and Cub Scannell, brothers-in-law Vernon Lamberg, Kenneth Baye, Andy Scannell and niece Marisa Maloney.
Family and friends may call at Ryan Funeral Home & Crematory, 305 N. Tenth Street, De Pere, WI from 4:00 to 8:00 PM on Friday, October 27, 2017. A prayer service will take place at 7:30 PM with Deacon Michael Dabeck officiating.
Visitation will continue at Nativity of Our Lord Church, 2270 South Oneida Street, Green Bay, WI from 9:00 AM until 10:45 Saturday, October 28, 2017.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 AM with Father Michael Ingold and Father Willard Vande Loo concelebrating.
In lieu of floral expressions, a memorial fund has been established in Gary's name. Please go to www.ryanfh.com to send online condolences to the Basten family.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Steven Bollom, Dr. Pierro Antuono, The VA, Unity Hospice Team, Visiting Angels, and all his caregivers, who enabled Gary to remain at home as his illness progressed.
We also extend our appreciation to Father Willard Vande Loo, Father Michael Ingold, Deacon Michael Dabeck, Unity Chaplain Bob Nooker and Unity volunteer Bill Harrington who provided spiritual comfort to Gary, along with the numerous friends and neighbors who were so supportive along his journey.

    Obituary:
John G. Dietz, 92, of Appleton, a Community Leader, Church Trustee, and, most importantly, a life-long avid aviator, made his final "touch and go" on October 29, 2015 at Cherry Meadows Hospice. He died peacefully after a mercifully short struggle with kidney/heart failure.
John was born on August 23, 1923, to the late George and Eleanore (Knapstein) Dietz of Greenville. He graduated from Appleton High School in 1941, and ran the family farm in Greenville during the War. From 1948 until his retirement in 1985, John was co-owner of Appleton Appliance Company (APCO), which was in the business of selling LP gas, appliances, and heating and air conditioning services. He was president and on the board of Service & Supply, Inc., and was a member of the Elks Club and the Fox Cities Chamber of Commerce.
John started flying in 1945, obtained his private pilot's license in 1947, and was passionate about flying from the day he soloed. He was a member of the Civil Air Patrol, the AOPA, and the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA). For over 40 years, John attended and worked at every Oshkosh EAA air show. He loved flying to a destination, especially to air shows and to the annual Washington Island Fly-in Fish Boil, where he was regularly the oldest pilot in attendance.
John met his wife Sylvia in 1948, and they married in 1950. In 1957, they built a new home on the edge of Appleton's South Side, where they raised four children and spent the remainder of their married life together. In retirement, John and Sylvia enjoyed being snowbirds at their condo in Naples, Florida. He enjoyed bowling, golfing, and was a Braves/Brewers and Packers fan. John especially enjoyed dancing with Sylvia to Big Band music; they were members of the Starduster's Dance Club for many years.
He was on the Outagamie County Board of Supervisors from 1959 to 1978, and served on the Airport Committee, during which time he advocated for the construction of a new regional airport in Outagamie County. On the 50th anniversary of the "Outagamie County Regional Airport" this August, John proudly carried the new flag that now flies over the renamed "Appleton International Airport."
A devout Catholic, and always at the forefront of everything, he was a founding member of Saint Bernadette Catholic Church in Appleton, served as one of its original Trustees, and helped plan the construction of its grade school, rectory and convent and was also an usher. John became a member of the Knights of Columbus in 1951, and eventually became the Grand Knight of Council #607, and president of the Columbus Club. He became a Member of the 4th Degree in 1964, and served as the 4th Degree's Faithful Navigator. Starting in 1967, John combined his passion for flying with his service to Catholic war veterans by regularly flying volunteer Knights to the VA Hospital in Tomah in order to take the Catholic vets to Mass.
John is survived by his wife of 65 years, Sylvia; his daughters: Margaret (Peggy) Dietz, San Francisco and Linda Dietz, San Jose, CA; his sons: George Dietz, Delafield WI, and Jeffrey Dietz, Appleton; his grandson: Jay Dietz, Greenfield WI; his two sisters: Mary Herwig, Appleton and Rita Brandt, West Allis, WI; his aunt: LaVerne Knapstein, Appleton; his brother-in-law: Alex O. Strobel, Naples, FL and sisters-in-law: Beatrice Sturm, Appleton and Bernice Strobe, Little Chute, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends. In addition to his parents and his wife's parents, John was preceded in death by his sister-in-law: Ruth B. Strobel and his brothers-in-law: Robert F. Herwig, Chuck Brandt, Oscar Sturm and Melvin, Mark and Sylvester Strobel.
A memorial service will be held at 5:00 pm, Friday, November 13, 2015 at St. Bernadette Catholic Church, 2331 E Lourdes Dr, Appleton) with Fr. Don Zuleger officiating and the Knights of Columbus 4th Degree Honor Guard. Friends may visit with the family on Friday at the church from 2:00 PM until the time of the service. Inurnment will be at St. Joseph Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donation may be made in memory of John Dietz to St. Bernadette Church or to the "Knights of Columbus Endowment Fund within the Community Fund" PO Box 563, Appleton, WI 54912.
