    Van Dyke, Lt. Col. L.N. (Reti red)Lt. Col. L.N. Van Dyke, age 88, Madison, succumbed to West Nile Virus on S eptember 20, 2005, at the Don and Marilyn Anderson Anderson Hospice Cente r. "Van" was born in Little Chute, WI on October 20, 1916, the son of Jo hn and Hulda Van Dyke. He graduated from Kimberly High School and also gra duated from C.S.T.C. (now UW Stevens Point). He taught and coached at Waup aca High School prior to military service in Germany (The Battle of The Bu lge) during World War II. In 1945, he returned from Germany and married h is college sweetheart, Nancy Steiner of Stevens Point. They both then taug ht at Waupaca High School until moving to Madison to pursue Master's Degre es. Van joined the UW Football Staff as an assistant coach in 1949 and rem ained until 1972, during which time Wisconsin went to three Rose Bowls- 19 53, 1960 and 1963. In 1972 be became Director-of-Grant-In-Aid for all UW a thletes. He was honored as "Badger of The Year" by the National "W" Cl ub in 1994. Van was a former member of Blackhawk Country Club and after h is retirement played golf often with friends at Odana Hills. In retireme nt he and his wife Nancy participated in numerous youth mission trips to a id families in the Appalachian Mountains. His faith was an integral pa rt of his life and an inspiration to the youth whom he served.In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sisters and their familie s: Mrs. Phyllis McClone of Clintonville; Mrs. June Josephs of Appleton; a nd Mrs. Vivian Koehn of Sheboygan.He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Harold Van Dy ke of Neenah.Special thanks to Sheree, John and Jason Powless, Barbara and Gordon Johns en, Dr. Robert Cole, Rev. Keith Schroerlucke, Rev. Amanda Stein and devot ed nieces and nephews.A visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, October 7, 200 5, at CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 3610 Speedway Road, Madison. A memorial servi ce will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 8, 2005, at FIRST UNITED M ETHODIST CHURCH, 203 Wisconsin Ave., Madison.
