Haen / Koene Accident - The New York Times - September 2, 1924
Scott Graykowski shared this information, Train Kills Six In Auto. Boy, Only Survivor of Wisconsin Crash, May Die
Special to The New York Times, New London, Wis. - Sept. 1. - Six persons were killed and a seventh probably fatally injured this afternoon when a southbound Chicago & North Western passenger train crashed into an automobile on a county grade one mile north of here. The car was carried 100 yards down the track. William Haen was driving.
    The dead are:
Haen, William, 40 years old, of Sheboygan, Wis.
    Haen, Mrs. William, his wife.
Haen, Raymond, 16 years old, a son.
Haen, Ruth, 3 years old, a daughter.
Koene, Peter, 35 years old, of Sheboygan.
Koene, Mrs. Peter, 33 years old, his wife.
The injured person is William Haen, 18 years old, fifth member of the Haen family. According to policemen of this city who rushed to the scene, all but two of the dead had expired when the ambulances arrived. These two were Mrs. Haen and Peter Koene. They were taking the last sacrament from a priest who was a passenger on the train. Within an hour after the accident they died.
William Haen was taken to a hospital in Appleton, 12 miles south of here. Physicians said there was little hope for his life.
Note: I was told of this incident by my mother. During the course of my research of the Haen/Rammer/Thiel families Sheboygan County, I decided to find out the facts. It took me a while to locate this because no one recalled the location of this incident! Of all sources, I located this in The New York Times, apparently an often over-looked source for genealogists. William Haen, Sr. & Mrs. Peter Dorothea Koene were siblings. They were going to Eland, Jct., Wis. to visit thier brothers, Frank & John. It has been said that William Haen, Jr. was driving the car.
