    Harold Birling, 86, Neenah, passed away Sunday, Aug. 29, 2010. He was born March 23, 1924, in Neenah, son of Joseph and Rose (Marquardt) Birling. Harold was a U.S. Navy veteran, having joined the Navy in 1942 after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. On May 31, 1947, Harold married Carol Hanson and they recently celebrated 63 years of marriage. Together they had three children; two sons, Jeffrey (Kathy), Hortonville, who was born on Harold's 25th birthday; Dan, Wausaukee; and a daughter Chris, Appleton. Harold was a skilled carpenter, having learned his trade from his wife's Uncle August Selle.
    He was employed by Carpenters Local 955 in Appleton until his retirement. Harold then fulfilled a dream by building his own retirement home in Wausaukee. He loved the outdoors and watching the deer in their backyard, feeding the birds, going camping with his grandchildren, hunting, and fishing. Harold was a member of St. Mark Evangelical Lutheran Church, Neenah.
    Harold is survived by his loving wife, Carol; his three children; grandchildren who referred to him as "Grampa Bunka": Billie Jo (Jake) Gross, Addie (Ryan) Mahoney, Jessica (Andrew) Anson, Heidi Delorey, Amber (Matt) Molle, Danielle Lewis, Nathan (Iva) Delorey, and Sean Delorey; "Great Grans": Olivia and Emily Gross, Jack Grafmeier, Iylee Mahoney, Madeline, Carson, and Evelyn Molle, and Joshua Delorey; further survived by a brother, Joe (Shirley) Birling; a sister, Janet Hall; several nieces and nephews.Harold was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Delores and Elaine.
    Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2010, at the Kessler Funeral Home, 304 S. Commercial Street, Neenah, with the Rev. Stephen Dietzler officiating. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Neenah. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 10 a.m. Tuesday until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established for the Marshfield Clinic Cancer Center in Marshfield, in hope that someone else will get a second chance at life as Harold did.
    Harold's family would like to thank Dr. Goldmann and the staff at Marshfield Clinic for treating Harold and allowing him 20 more years to enjoy his home in the north, his family, and his nightly bowl of ice cream! They would also like to extend their sincerest gratitude to the wonderful staff at Kilkenny Cottage, as well as Heartland Hospice, for their excellent care in Harold's final month.
