Age 60, passed away after a spirited and courageous battle with cancer on February 16, 2004, at his home in the loving arms of his family. He was born March 25, 1943 in Wilmington, Delaware to Michael J. and Alice A. (Hulke) Nielsen, Appleton. In 1963, he married his wife of 40 years, Marilyn Wittlin. Harley was a proud union iron worker who worked for Boldt Construction for many years. He then joined his brother Wesley to form Nielsen Erecting before retiring in 1999. Harley was an avid NASCAR fan, especially fond of the late Dale Earnhardt Sr. We're sure he was waiting to give you his autograph in heaven.
He will be deeply missed by his wife, Marilyn; children: Mary Jo (Steve) VanderLoop, Oshkosh; Lisa (Joel) Beyer, Appleton; Patrick (Kim) Nielsen, West Bend; Lorna (Matthew) Pengrazi, Shiocton; Holly (Jason) Vosters, Freedom; and Andy (Becky) Nielsen, Black Creek; and grandchildren: Ben and Grayson VanderLoop, Brandon and Angela Banker, Elizabeth and Veda Beyer, Adam and Kate Nielsen, Jordan Grissman, Julia, Jager and Jovi Pengrazi, Jade and Marty Vosters; and great-grandchild Crosby Ziebell. His loss will also be greatly felt by his dogs Tanner and Cody.
Harley is further survived by his mother, Alice Nielsen, Appleton; sisters: Loretta Hacker, Columbus, OH; Lorna Nielsen, Appleton; Mary (Dave) Yates, Appleton; Gloria Kormanik, Eden Prairie, MN; brothers: John (Susan) Nielsen, Alliance, OH; Jim Nielsen, Appleton; brother-in-law, Steven Rusch, Minnetonka, MN; and sister-in-law, Chris Nielsen, Appleton.
He is also survived by brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Marce (Eugene) Paltzer, Betty (Earnest) Paltzer, Clarence (Glenna) Wittlin, and Gerald (Winnifred) Wittlin.
He was preceded in death by his father, Michael Nielsen; sister, Linda Rusch; brother, Wesley Nielsen; father and mother-in-law, Erwin and Elizabeth Wittlin; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Evelyn and Cyril Baumann.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Dr. William Guenther and his staff at the Martha Siekman Cancer Center, especially Marlene and Karen for their extra special warmth and thoughtfulness. We would also like to thank the Amersons for being one-of-a-kind neighbors, who were always there to lighten the mood when needed.
Mass will be celebrated in honor of his life at 3 p.m. Thursday, February 19, 2004 at St. Edward's Catholic Church, Mackville. Friends and family will be received from 1 p.m. to time of service.
Thanks Dad for fighting the battle with humor and dignity. Thanks God for giving us the extra time to enjoy him.
