Obituary:
Lorraine Alta Winkler, age 84, of Stockbridge, died on Friday, February 1, 2013 at her home. She was born March 2, 1928 in the Town of Stockbridge, daughter of the late Joseph & Lydia (Bergen) Gerhartz. Lorraine married Charles J. Winkler on June 8, 1948 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Stockbridge and the couple worked side by side on their family farm in the Town of Stockbridge. Charles preceded Lorraine in death on May 8, 2000.
Lorraine was a hard worker her whole life; in addition to farming, she had worked in her younger years for her aunt and uncle, Elmer & Nola Schussman, at the Brothertown Bar and Dance Hall. Lorraine was a woman of deep faith who belonged to St. Mary Catholic Church in Stockbridge where she also belonged to the Christian Women. She volunteered countless hours as a Main Leader for the Lakeshore North 4-H Club and belonged to the Calumet County Riding Club. Despite other people's sentiments, Lorraine looked forward to riding 'Tammy'; a horse who rarely got along anyone except Lorraine.
She also looked forward to the Calumet County Homemakers annual 'Day of Knowledge' workshop. Lorraine was a strong, yet humble woman whose kind and gentle spirit brought joy and comfort to those around her. She always made sure that everyone else's needs came first. Every year, Lorraine planted a large garden to help provide food for her family, and she canned nearly everything she grew to help supply nourishment through the winter. Her family often gathered together Sunday's for home cooked meals.
In her later years, she looked forward to visits from her grandchildren; it was a time which they could share together baking bread or cookies. Lorraine loved and cherished every member of her family and they knew that they could always count on her to be there for them when they needed her.
Survivors include her children: Pat (Ron) Van Den Heuvel of Kaukauna and their child, Ryan Van Den Heuvel; Margie Ott of Appleton and her children, Nathan (Jessica) Ott & Benjamin Ott; Donald (Deb) Winkler of Stockbridge and their children, Megan, Morgan & Erin Winkler; Robert Winkler and his fiancée, Jill Moyer and her children, Brittany & Ashley Ecker and Payton Moyer; a sister: Mary Lou Brennan of CA, and a brother: David (Maria) Gerhartz of CA. Lorraine is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband: Charles; her siblings: Eunice Nennig, Sr. Lydia Gerhartz, Claude Gerhartz, Ceil Teske, Bernie Vogt, as well as 3 other infant siblings.
Funeral service will be at 11:30 am on Tuesday, February 5, 2013 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Stockbridge. Burial will follow in the Parish Cemetery. Friends may call at the church from 9:00 am until 11:15 am on Tuesday, February 5, 2013.
The family would like to thank all of the doctors and the staff of the Calumet County Hospice for all of the loving care that Lorraine received. They would also like to offer a special thank you to Holly for the wonderful and attentive care that she gave to their mom over the last years.
