    Biography:
    S. C. SHANNON, president and treasurer of the S. C. Shannon Company, wholesale grocers at Nos. 767-79 Morrison street, Appleton, Wisconsin, was born in England, March 5, 1870, and is a son of D. H. and E. B. Shannon, who came to the United States in 1874. The father of Mr. Shannon was formerly in the flour business but has been retired for the past fifteen years. Of his nine children, five sons and one daughter survive. S. C. Shannon was yet a school boy when he first embarked in the grocery business, to which he has devoted his main efforts all his life, being then only eleven years of age. That he possessed unusual business capacity may be inferred when, at sixteen, his father gave him charge of a grocery store, which he successfully conducted and built up a retail business that was second to none in the State. Mr. Shannon in 1903 organized his present company and incorporated it, with the following officers: S. C. Shannon, president and treasurer; H. J. Ingold, secretary, and George D. Downer, vice-president. Directors: S. C. Shannon, H. J. Ingold, G. D. Downer and G. P. Hewitt. Three buildings are occupied by the company, the main building being three stories high and with dimensions of 100x85 feet; the cold storage building four stories high, with dimensions of 35x50 feet; while the warehouse has dimensions of 45x85 feet, the structures covering half a city block. The company sends two salesmen to cover outside territory, gives constant employment to fifteen people, works four teams for local trade, and sells over a radius of fifty miles from Appleton. Mr. Shannon is the head and master mind of this large business, one that has been built up through his energy and good judgment. On February 24, 1910, Mr. Shannon was married to Miss Mabel Ottery, who was born at Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, and for eight years prior to her marriage had taught school at Appleton. They have one son, S. C., Jr. Mr. Shannon has been as active in the affairs of the city as he has been successful in his own concerns. For twelve years he has been alderman from the First ward and for the past two years has been president of the city council, and his public-spirited attitude on important questions has resulted advantageously for the city. For eight years he served as president of the Appleton Grove Association and for two years he was president of the Merchants' Association. He is active also in fraternal life and is a member of the Masons and the Knights of Pythias.

Sidney married Ottery, Mabel Bef 1911. Mabel was born Abt Jan 1883, Fond Du Lac, Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin, USA; died Abt 1946, Appleton, Outagamie, Wisconsin, USA; was buried , Riverside Cemetery, Appleton, Wisconsin, USA. [Group Sheet]

    Obituary:
    Shannon, Edwin R.
Edwin R. Shannon, 87, of Appleton died at home, surrounded by loving family, on Friday, September 3, 2004. He was born on March 18, 1917 in Appleton to the late Edwin W. Shannon and Erna Grundeman Shannon. He graduated from Lawrence College in 1939, then earned a Master's degree in music at Northwestern University. After teaching in Louisiana and Illinois, he returned to Appleton in 1945 to raise a family and manage Shannon Office Supply, which had been started by his father in 1904.
Music was an ongoing theme in Ed's life. At age four he sang "O Tannenbaum' in German at the Knights of Pythias Hall. He picked up the violin in sixth grade and went on to be concertmaster of the Appleton High School orchestra (which took second place in a national music tournament and played at the Chicago World's Fair) and the Lawrence College orchestra. He was violin soloist at his Lawrence and Northwestern commencement concerts and was elected to the national honorary music fraternity Pi Kappa Lambda. He later played violin in the Lawrence, Fox Valley, and Green Bay symphonies and for Attic Theatre musicals and other productions. He appreciated good music of all kinds.
Ed's interests were wide-ranging. As a young man, he earned a pilot's license and enjoyed flying. Very much a do-it-yourselfer, Ed Shannon enjoyed working with his hands: he built his own photo enlarger and darkroom, and remodeled several houses. He traveled widely, and especially loved Kenya. He enjoyed the companionship of his music and fishing comrades, and was pleased to be a member of Appleton Rotary Club and the High Lake Eating and Boating Society. He volunteered his talents and efforts to various educational and service organizations. Ed Shannon will be remembered by many for his intellectual curiosity, his respect for nature and humankind, and his gentle sense of humor.
He is survived by his wife, Geraldine Dillon Shannon of Appleton; son Michael R. Shannon (fiance Jody Marks), Duluth, Minnesota; and daughter Rachel M. Shannon (husband Stephen Weis), Appleton. His step-children are Michael Furstenberg (wife Diane, children Rayne and Kimbre Lee; her husband Tim Kiley and their children Cana, Cooper, Letty Rose, and Cecilee) of Black Creek; Noel Grunwaldt (husband Joel, children Peter, Sarah, and Paul; his wife Melissa and their children Hawkin and Maizie) of Anchorage, Alaska; Stephen Furstenberg (wife Mary) of Neenah; and David Furstenberg (wife Susan, children Erich and Meghan) of Waupaca. Ed was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Scott Lester Shannon.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, September 8, 2004 at Memorial Presbyterian Church, 803 E. College Avenue, Appleton. Visitation will be between 10:00 and 11:00 AM.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Lee Vogel and the many kind and caring friends, neighbors and hospice personnel who assisted Ed in his final journey.

Edwin married Dillon, Geraldine D. 30 Nov 1976. Geraldine (daughter of Dillon, Dr. Lawrence H. and Keets, Althea) was born 24 Feb 1918, Appleton, Outagamie, Wisconsin, USA; died 31 Oct 2010, Appleton, Outagamie, Wisconsin, USA. [Group Sheet]
