    Biography:
Christian Wunderlich came to America with his parents, Michael and Catherine, and his siblings when Christian was just 13 years old. The family sold all their possessions and traveled from Bavaria to the port city of Bremen, Germany. On August 20, 1847 they departed on the sailing ship, "Emigrant", bound for New York City with about 240 passengers. They arrived in New York after a speedy one month trip. They went by canal to Buffalo and then on a steamer through the Great Lakes to Milwaukee. His father purchased a farm just north of Milwaukee in the town of Granville where the nearby Granville Lutheran Church had started. This church became a founding congregation to what later became known as the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod. Some 8 years earlier, one of their relatives, Johann Carl Christian Wunderlich, left from Saxony, Germany and came to America with his family and settled near St. Louis. Their colony of Saxon immigrants formed the church body that later became known as the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod.
When Christian was 19 years old he moved further north in Wisconsin, leaving family and friends behind. He purchased a farm in the Town of Ellington in Outagamie County from Ferdinand Schultz. The land was very wild then but quickly became one of the finest farm properties in the area. Christian arrived in the Town of Ellington a mere five years after the first white settler came and built a sawmill in the vicinity of the Wolf River and Bear Creek. There were an abundance of Pine Trees on the slopes and the land beneath the trees was suitable for farming.
Just a few years before Christian arrived, at the beginning of 1850, there were but two houses on site of Stephensville, one a house of hewed logs, the other a frame, built by Wm. Bruce. There were as yet no public roads. The first comers cut the underbrush and logs and cleared them away, enough to get through with their teams winding among the trees, avoiding the hills and swamps; later comers following the same track until there was a fairly plain trail from Hortonville and toward the junction of the Shioc and Wolf rivers. A road had been laid from Appleton to Bruce's Mill, and there was an old Indian trail leading toward Green Bay which might be traveled on horseback or afoot. As soon as the town was organized, road districts were established, routes were "looked out" and straight roads along section lines were established, and later where the character of the country required roads at angles from the cardinal points of the compass, routes were surveyed and public highways four rods wide were laid. One of these having a general easterly trend from Bruce's Mill was called the Wolf River and Green Bay Road. The Green Bay Road followed practically the route of the original Indian trail and was surveyed in January, 1851.
The Native Americans had burial places near the village of Stephensville, one about forty rods west of the village, another was east of the road entering the village from the south not far back from the old dam. Two graves, one in each location, seemed especially venerated by them, and after the coming of the first settlers offerings of tobacco and a sort of flag were placed there.
As the lumber industry developed in the upper regions of the Wolf and Shioc rivers, the route through Ellington became a much traveled highway and the entertainment afforded by Stephensville made it a favored stopping place. Any night an impromptu dance or party could be arranged and revelry and frolic abounded. These dances with log-rollings, cabin raisings and later, spelling-bees, quiltings and singing schools formed the entertainments of the settlement.

The few other German settlers were developing a fine reputation among the Yankee and Irish settlers. The Germans had been accustomed to getting the most out of limited acreage in their homeland and they applied the same techniques here in Wisconsin even though they now had the opportunity afforded by much more land. Christian began to cultivate his land and engage in farming, and added to his property from time to time, becoming one of' the influential farmers of his day, and a man held in the highest esteem by his fellow citizens, who elected him to various positions of' honor and trust.
Mr. Wunderlich was a charter member of the German Lutheran Church in the township and when he died the Appleton Post Crescent noted that he was the last of the charter members. Before his retirement from farming, Christian was well known in the county as was his son, Christian, after him. Both men became well to do agriculturalists who brought the land to a high state of cultivation, and with yields full of prosperous crops. Their buildings were always in an excellent state of repair, and the farm well appointed and equipped with the latest and most highly improved power farming machinery. The farm was located on what was called the Greenville Rural Route No. 16. Today, part of the Wunderlich farm has been converted into a golf course.
On March 22, 1861, Christian married Dorothea (Dora) Berg. She was born on October 3, 1841 in Gosdorf, Schwerin, Mecklenberg. She and her parents left Hamburg, Germany on June 15, 1851 on the "Sir Isaac Newton" and arrived in New York City on August 28, 1851 with a final destination of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Dora's ancestral tree can be traced back four more generations to Christoph Barg, who was born in Gressow, Mecklenberg, Germany in 1711. Christian and Dora raised eight children on their farm who all became successful in their own right. Each of their four sons, Christian, William, Charles and Frederick became prosperous farmers and community leaders in the area Three daughters, Almira, Dora and Anna married ambitious young men and a fourth daughter, Ida, remained single and became a well respected teacher at the Technical School.
In 1905, Christian and his wife, Dora, retired from farming and moved to 522 North Division St. in Appleton where they enjoyed several more decades of life. They were both known for being well read and up to date on current events. On the occasion of their 60th Wedding Anniversary, March 22, 1921, their family surprised them with a party and full family reunion. They renewed their wedding vows at St. Paul Lutheran Church in the morning and a dinner party was hosted for over 100 guests by their daughter, Ida. A professional photographer was engaged to take a full family portrait of them in front of their residence.
Christian and Dora lived a long and full life and many of their descendants have done the same. Perhaps their longevity has a lot to do with living to serve others and living with all things in moderation. The conservative and frugal values which they passed on have been instrumental in their descendants also being respected community members and church leaders.

Christian married Berg, Dorothea Maria 22 Mar 1860. Dorothea (daughter of Berg, Johann Fredrich and Wulf, Anna Elizabeth) was born 3 Oct 1841, Gosdorf, Schwerin, Mecklenburg, Germany; died 9 Nov 1929, Appleton, Outagamie, Wisconsin, USA. [Group Sheet]

    Biography:
FREDERICK W. WUNDERLICH, who is engaged in general farming on a tract of 116 acres of highly improved land in Greenville township, Outagamie county, was born in Ellington township, this county, February 20, 1862, and is a son of Christian and Dora (Berg) Wunderlich, natives of Germany. Christian Wunderlich was about thirteen years old when he accompanied his parents to this country, the family first locating near Milwaukee, where the grandfather of Frederick W. Wunderlich spent the remainder of his life, and where Christian Wunderlich grew to manhood. There were five brothers in the family, all of whom became wealthy landowners, Christian Wunderlich acquiring an excellent property in Ellington township, whence he had moved shortly after his marriage, and this he continued to operate until his retirement, when the farm was sold to his son. In 1903 Mr. and Mrs. Wunderlich removed to Appleton, in which city they have since resided. Frederick W. Wunderlich was the oldest of his parents' family of eight children, and his boyhood was spent in the manner common to farmers' sons of that .day, his education being secured in the district schools of his neighborhood during the winter months when he could be spared from the farm. He remained on the home farm until his marriage, September 8, 1891, to Miss Tillie Winter, who was born in Germany in 1870, and came with her parents to America about 1873. They were Martin and Gustie (Stelter) Winter, and located on a farm in Center township, where Mr. Winter died, the mother living with her children until her death in March, 1911. They were the parents of nine children, and of these Mrs. Wunderlich was the third in order of birth. After his marriage, Mr. Wunderlich purchased a farm in Lyon county, Minnesota, on which he resided during the summer months for about four years after marriage and then moved there for the entire year for a period covering eleven years, after which he sold out and returned to Outagamie county, living in Appleton for one year and spending a like period on a Greenville township farm, and then purchasing his present property of 116 acres, which he operates as a general farm. He is one of the progressive agriculturists of his section, and during threshing seasons operates a machine among the farmers of his vicinity. He and Mrs. Wunderlich have had a family of seven children: Edwin, Arthur, Willie, Zerlina, Ida, Helen and Irvin. The family is connected with the Lutheran Church, and in political matters he is independent, having served on the school board in his present district.

    Biography:
CHARLES WUNDERLICH, one of Ellington township's substantial citizens, and the owner of a well cultivated tract of farming land, was born on his father's farm in Ellington township, October 22, 1864, and is a son of Christopher Wunderlich. Christopher Wunderlich, who was a native of Germany, came to this country at the age of twelve years with his parents, the family settling first in Milwaukee, in which city he grew to manhood. During the '50s he came to Ellington township, purchasing wild land, which he cleared from the timber and cultivated into an excellent farm. For many years he was engaged in farming here, and in 1905 he retired from active life and went to Appleton, in which city he and his wife now reside. Charles Wunderlich received a good district school education, and began to learn the rudiments of farming when still a small boy, assisting his father and brothers in cultivating the home place. He has always worked in this district with the exception of a few years before his marriage, when he was engaged in cultivating some land he owned in Minnesota, but he eventually returned to the home farm. He rented the property here until 1906, when he purchased the farm he now owns, and he carries on general farming along scientific lines. Mr. Wunderlich is well versed in crop rotation and an advocate of the use of the latest and most highly improved farming machinery, and the appearance of his property gives evidence of excellent management. In November, 1905, Mr. Wunderlich was married to Miss Martha Discher, who was born in Neenah, Wisconsin, in May, 1881, and they have had two children, namely: Harvey, who died at the age of one and one-half years, and Howard, who was born in March, 1909. Mr. and Mrs. Wunderlich are faithful members of the German Lutheran Church of Ellington.

    Biography:
CHRISTIAN WUNDERLICH, an influential and well-to-do agriculturist of Ellington township, whose fine farm is situated on Greenville Rural Route No. 16, has been a lifelong resident of this township, having been born on the farm he now operates, February 12, 1868, a son of Christian and Dora Wunderlich. Mr. Wunderlich's father was born in Germany, and on coming to this country with his parents at the age of twelve years, settled first in Milwaukee, where he was reared. He came to Ellington township during the '50s, when a young man, and took up wild land, which was the nucleus for the present fine Wunderlich property. Here he was engaged in agricultural pursuits until his retirement in 1905, at which time he went to Appleton, and he and his wife now live in that city. Chris was one of eight children born to his parents, and he was reared on his father's farm, dividing his time with work thereon and attendance in the district schools of his neighborhood. He continued to work for his father until he was twenty-seven years of age, at which time the farm was given into his management, and he subsequently bought the farm from his father. This property, which was originally owned by Ferdinand Schultz and bought from him by Christian Wunderlich, Sr., has been brought to a high state of cultivation, and yields full, prosperous crops. The buildings are in an excellent state of repair, and the farm is well appointed and equipped with the latest and most highly improved power farming machinery. In 1895 Mr. Wunderlich was married to Mary Riehl, the estimable daughter of Christian and Theresa Riehl, farming people of Center township, and to this union there have been born seven children, of whom one, Hilbert, died at the age of eight years. Those who survive are Edna, Hilda, Ora, Caryle, Harold and Ruth. Mr. and Mrs. Wunderlich are faithful members of the German Lutheran Church of Ellington.

    Biography:
WILLIAM WUNDERLICH, whose fine farm of 160 acres is situated in Center township, is one of the progressive agriculturists of Outagamie county, Wisconsin, and is a native of Ellington, this county, and a son of Christian Wunderlich. Christian Wunderlich was born in Bavaria, Germany, and as a young man came to the United States, settling at Greenville, Wisconsin, where he resided until about 1852, and in that year located in Ellington township, Outagamie county. Purchasing land, he commenced to cultivate it and engage in farming, and added to his property from time to time, becoming one of' the influential farmers of his day, and a man held in the highest esteem by his fellow citizens, who elected him to various positions of' honor and trust. He is still living, his home being in Appleton, where he moved after his retirement from business activities, and is in good health and enjoying the fruits of the years of his early labor. Christian Wunderlich was united in marriage with Dora Berg, who was born in Germany and came to this country with her parents, and she also survives and is hale and hearty despite advancing years. They had a family of eight children. William Wunderlich was born on his father's farm, April 19, 1877, and his schooling was secured in the district schools near his home and Northwestern University, from which he was graduated at the age of twenty-two years. He then returned to his father's farm, on which he worked until 1904, and in that year purchased the property which he now owns, an excellent tract of 160 acres of farming land, on which he has made many improvements. General farming and stock raising have demanded all of his time and attention, and he has never allowed his name to be used as candidate for political preferment. With his family, he is a member of the Lutheran church at Ellington. On September 13, 1904, Mr. Wunderlich was united in marriage with Miss Caroline Riehl, daughter of Christian and Theresa (Fries) Riehl, of Center township, and three children have been born to this union: Myrtle, born August 21, 1906; Waldo, born February 10, 1909; and Ethel, born January 12, 1910.
