    Biography:
WILLIAM BUCHANAN, manager of the Appleton Wire Works, manufacturers of fourdrinier wires, cylinder covers and washer wires, and the second largest concern of its kind in the United States, is one of the veterans of this industry, having been connected with it during a long and active career. The Appleton Wire Works were established in 1895, the buildings being erected in 1895 and 1896 and occupied during the spring of the latter year. William Buchanan was elected manager; G. E. Buchanan, secretary-treasurer; John R. Buchanan, sales manager, and A. B. Weissenborn, superintendent. The brass wire cloth manufactured by the concern is used by paper manufacturers, and the $200,000 annual output supplies nearly the whole trade of the Fox River Valley, as well as concerns all over the United States, Mexico, Canada, China and Japan. Employment is given to 100 men in two blocks of buildings of two-story character, covering 50,000 square feet; steam and electric power is used, and the looms are worked by compressed air and electricity under a method invented by A. B. Weissenborn.
William Buchanan was born in Scotland, in 1842, and is a son of Robert and Jean (McVicker) Buchanan, who came to the United States in 1847. Robert Buchanan, who was a hand weaver, was one of the first in this business in this country, going to work for the first company manufacturing wire cloth in the United States, William Stevens & Son, at Belleville, New Jersey. Later he was connected with the De Witt Wire Cloth Company, and then established the Buchanan Bolt Wire Company at Holyoke, Massachusetts, with which he was connected up to the time of his death. William Buchanan was foreman of the De Witt Wire Cloth Company for nine years, at Belleville, New Jersey, and in 1876 he left this company to organize the firm of Buchanan & Smith, at Bloomfield, New Jersey. In 1878 John Eastwood was admitted to the firm, which now does business under the firm style of Eastwood Wire Manufacturing Company, the largest concern of its kind in the United States, and in 1882 Mr. Buchanan sold his interests and moved to Springfield, Massachusetts, where he became foreman of the Cheney Bigelow Wire Works, establishing the fourdrinier department for them. In 1896 with his two sons, G. E. and J. R. and his brother-in-law, A. B. Weissenborn, he established the Appleton Wire Works. In 1869, Mr. Buchanan was married to Annette Weissenborn, daughter of Henry and Therese Weissenborn, of Franklin, New Jersey, and four children were born to this union: Gustavus E., Annette, John R. and Theresa, deceased .
Of the foregoing children Gustavus E. Buchanan was born March 7, 1870, in Belleville, New Jersey, and received his education in the schools of that place and Springfield, Massachusetts, after which he was engaged with the Cheney Bigelow Works for eight years as bookkeeper. He married Josephine Marston Pond, of Appleton, daughter of O. W. Pond, and they have two children: William E. and Josephine. He is a member of the Blue Lodge and Chapter of the Masons. Annette Buchanan is living at home. John R. Buchanan married Anna B. Johnson of Springfield, Massachusetts. He was born at Belleville, New Jersey, December 4, 1871, and for some years after leaving school was connected with Smith & Wesson. He is a member of the Elks, and has two children: Dorothy and Gertrude. The Buchanan family has always been connected with the Congregational Church .

    APPLETON POST-CRESCENT Monday, June 15,1964
James P. Buchanan The whole community of the Fox River Valley will feel the loss through an early death of James Buchanan, for a number of years a resident of the Green Bay area and for the last ten years of the Fox Cities. Mr. Buchanan's community contributions were extensive. He well deserved the 1952 Distinguished Service award of the Junior Chamber of Commerce in Green Bay but since that time his interests and work on behalf of a variety of community projects expanded. Despite heavy business responsibility and a growing young family he was a leader in c h u r c h affairs, service clubs, hospital and medical projects, music and educational organizations and Scout groups. Mr. Buchanan combined his leadership ability with a deep sense of personal responsibility and a quiet and reasoned approach to the myriad problems he faced. His talents in this part of Wisconsin will be greatly missed.

James married Harkins, Marjorie 27 May 1943. Marjorie was born 26 Sep 1920; died 17 Feb 2004, Superior, Douglas, Wisconsin, USA. [Group Sheet]

    Obituary:
Buchanan, Philip Edward 42 2/22/1967 3/2/2009 Philip Edward Buchanan died on Monday, March 2, 2009, in Portland. He was born in Hanover, N.H., on George Washington's birthday, Feb. 22, 1967. He attended Edison School in Appleton, Gerritts Junior High in Kim-berly, and Wayland Academy in Beaver Dam, Wis. He was a 1990 graduate of The Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colo., where he met his life partner, his dearest Wendy Thomas. Following college, he secured a single engine commercial pilot's license for both land and sea at Hillsboro Helicopters in Oregon. His passion was float planes, and he spent many hours flying around both the Columbia and Willamette Rivers. After moving to Wisconsin, he was employed by Fox River Paper Company in Appleton in the human resources department, and was transferred to Housatonic, Mass., where its Rising Paper division was located. Once there, Phil decided to pursue his dream of building custom furniture, and apprenticed himself to Peter Thorne of West Stockbridge, Mass. Later, he set up his own shop in Housatonic, where he built beautiful pieces of furniture. Phil also served on the town library committee and was instrumental in establishing a regional guild for fellow furniture makers. Phil and Wendy were married in Portland, her home town, in August 1993. When in Housatonic, they built their dream home on a granite hillside. Their daughter Zoey was born in 2003, and the family raised bees, blueberries, Newfoundlands and a cat. In his senior year in high school, 1985, Phil was diagnosed with a head tumor. For 24 years, Phil met the challenges of managing this cancer through surgeries, radiation therapies, and medications. He and Wendy traveled, skied, canoed, swam, camped, drove Phil's 1976 Landcruiser, listened to music, and laughed together. In 2006, Phil became blind; he and Wendy determined to sell their home and his business and move to Portland. Phil enrolled at the Commission for the Blind where he began to learn braille, to acquire mobility skills, and to establish a workshop in his new home. Unfortunately, in 2008, the pressures of the tumor in his head took their toll, and Phil's health declined. In the last two months, Phil was bedridden in his home, where he enjoyed the company and appreciated the support of his friends and family. His father-in-law Chris and his friend Paul Ecker were especially faithful companions. Paul was an extraordinary friend. Phil was a person of simple values, of trust and hopefulness. He worked hard and laughed a lot - his sense of humor was wicked and wry and funny. He met people honestly; he was faithful. Phil met the challenges in his life with grace, and surmounted them with honor. Survivors include his wife, Wendy; their daughter, Zoey; his parents-in-law, Chris and Sarah Thomas of Portland; and a sister-in-law, Jennifer Thomas and her life partner, Ruth Zolock of Washington D.C. He is also survived by his parents, Robert and Bonnie Buchanan of Appleton, Wis; his brother, Gus and wife, Kara, and their daughters, Gwyneth and Iris of Burlington, Vt.; and his sister, Emily Buchanan Lehto and her children, Sydney and Robert of Appleton, Wis. He is also survived by many wonderful aunts, uncles, and cousins of the Glidden, Parker, Scanlon, Buchanan and Vitalis clans. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, William E. and Josephine B. Buchanan, and John "Jack" M. and Iris O. Glidden. Phil is also mourned by many friends he loved and with whom he maintained deep relationships until his death. Remembrance services and a celebration of Phil's life will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 28, 2009, at Cheatham Hall at the World Forestry Center, 4033 SW Canyon Road in Portland and in Appleton, Wis., in August. A memorial fund in Phil's name has been established at Camp Manito-wish YMCA. Contributions may be sent to this address: Box 246, Boulder Jct., WI 54512. Arrangements by Crown - Milwaukie 503-653-7076.
