Victim of Influenza - One of the sad deaths, and there were many of them, resulting from influenza was that of Emmet McHugh which occured suddenly on the morning of Saturday, December 21st. Mr. McHugh had been working at Manitowoc where he was taken ill and came home the Saturday before. He felt so much better that he spoke of going to work on Thursday when he had a relapse and failed rapidly until he passed away. At six o'clock Saturday morning he remarked he was feeling much better but an hour later was cold in death.
Emmet James McHugh, son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael McHugh, was born in the town of Stockbridge April 3, 1892, attended the rural schools and later occupied his time on the home farm. Four years ago he went to Mellen where he was employed as a baggage master in the Soo Line Depot. He returned to his home town and on April 4, 1916 was united in marriage to Marian Mortimer, daughter of the late Albert Mortimer of Chilton town. They settled in this city in the Mortimer cottage on Madison street and he entered the employ of the Carnation Milk Products Company. He also worked for the chilton canning company, rendering excellent service wherever employed. The young man was well liked wherever he lived. He was accommodating and generous which qualities made him many friends, all of whom sympathize deeply with the widow and two little children, his parents, brothers and sisters in their sorrow.
The funeral, which was private, was held on Saturday morning, Requiem Mass being celebrated at St. Augustine's church and internment in St. Augustine cemetery. He leaves to mourn, a wife and two children, Ethel and Roger, his parents, four brothers, Edw. with the American Engineers in France, Ray at Racine, Harry and Leonard at home and two sisters, Mrs. William D. Jaeger of South Stockbridge and Bertha at home.

Emmett married Mortimer, Marian 4 Apr 1916. Marian was born 21 Oct 1898; died 11 Dec 1978. [Group Sheet]
