    Thomas Nickel was born 17 Jun 1800 in western PA and was probably the son of William and Isabel Nickel of Delaware Twp, Mercer Co, PA. Thomas Nickel married c1820 Catherine Rose, daughter of John and Susannah (Ault) Rose also of Delaware Twp. Thomas and Catherine had at least 10 children, all born in Mercer Co, PA. In 1847, they sold their land in Mercer County to the Methodist Church for $1 and moved their entire family to the town of Utica, Winnebago Co, WI. In February 1852, they moved farther north through the wilderness to Johnson's Trading Post, Waupaca Co. The Nickel's lived in what is now Maple Creek, Outagamie Co, WI.
    Unfortunately, Thomas Nickel, Sr died only 2 months after the move to Maple Creek. Since the township did not have a cemetery yet, Thomas Nickel was buried in the woods nearby. The Maple Creek Cemetery was later staked-out around the graves of Thomas Nickel and his grandson, "baby" McDonald, Thomas, Catherine and most of their children were buried in Old Maple Creek (Golden Hill) Cemetery near New London.
    The information about the Nickel's move north is recorded in the History of Outagamie Co, by Ryan Thomas. Some of the Nickel's children were also recorded in the history including, Thomas C., Levi and John Nickel, all living in Maple Creek. George W. Law was said to be the first settler in this area. There were many Indians living there at that time and "it seemed nearly a year before his wife saw (another) white woman". His wife was Isabella Nickel, daughter of Thomas and Catherine (Rose) Nickel.

    Her husband, Samuel W. Turney, enlisted as a Private in Company D, 21st Wisconsin Infantry, on 14 Aug 1862.
    The next day, his younger brother Benjamin enlisted into the same unit as a teamster. Benjamin would be killed on 30 Dec 1862, while trying to save his mule team from Confederate troops who were bent on capturing him and the mules.
    Samuel was an infantryman, who was captured at Chickamauga on 20 Sep 1863. He was taken to Andersonville Prison in Sumter County, Georgia. He died on 18 Jun 1864, essentially of starvation, and he is buried there.
    Susan was the daughter of Thomas Nickel and Catherine (ROSE) Nickel.

    Pioneer Maple Creek Woman Dies Saturday
    Maple Creek - Mrs. Lena Raeder, 69, pioneer resident of Maple Creek died at her home at 8:30 Saturday evening following an illness of two months.
    She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Charles Schweitzer of Thornton; five sons, Edward, William, Martin, and Arthur Raeder, all of Deer Creek, and Herman Raeder of Maple Creek; 11 grandchildren; six brothers, Fred Rohloff of California, Julius of Fond du Lac, Edward Rohloff of Mukwa, Herman Rohloff of Oshkosh, August and Henry Rohloff of Maple Creek; and two sisters, Mrs. William Beulow of New London and Mrs. Joseph Miller of Chicago.
    The funeral will be held at the residence at 1 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, followed by services in Christ Lutheran church of Maple Creek. The Rev. Immanuel Boettcher will officiate and burial will be in the old Maple Creek Cemetery.

    Herman A. Roloff, 83, of 420 High Ave., died late Saturday evening in his sleep at home.
    He was born in the Town of Maple Creek on Nov. 23, 1883 and was married there on Nov. 24, 1906 to Anna Knuth, who preceded him in death on Aug. 1, 1956.
    Mr. Roloff farmed in the Town of Liberty until 1929, then came to Oshkosh to be employed by Cook & Brown Co. and Pipkorn Fuel & Supply Co. until retiring 12 years ago. He was a member of Martin Luther Church.
    Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Laverne (Vernetta) Schirmacher, Glen Burnie, Md., Mrs. Edward (Marcella) Schroeder, Mrs. William (Lois) Koepke, Oshkosh, and Mrs. Oscar (Ramona) Knuth. St. Joseph, Mich.; 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
    Services will be held Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at Martin Lutheran Church, with the Rev. H. O. Kleinhans officiating. Burial will be in Old Maple Creek Cemetery, Outagamie County.

    Age 77, passed away unexpectedly at her residence on Wednesday. She was born September 15, 1897 in the Township of Deer Creek. The former Mabel Raeder was married to Charles Schweitzer on August 26, 1920 and they would have celebrated their 55th wedding aniversary in August of this year. She had lived in Deer Creek area most of her life and 20 years in Shawano County where they farmed. She was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church of Maple Creek. Survivors include her husband, Charles; two sons, Harold and Franklin both of Rt. 2, New London; four daughters, Mrs. Alfred (Lucille) Strauss of Shawano, Mrs. James (Jeanette) Oashger of Appleton, Mrs. Leroy (Ruth) Peterson, and Mrs. Harlow (Ellen) Reinert both of New London; a brother, William Raeder of Shawano; 21 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four brothers. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Maple Creek with the Rev.Nathan Engel officiating. Interment will be in the New maple Creek Cemetery.     Ruth E. (Schweitzer) Peterson, age 89, passed away on Sunday, April 2, 2017. She was born March 16, 1928, in the Town of Richmond, (Shawano County), daughter of the late Charles and Mabel (Raeder) Schweitzer. She was united in marriage to LeRoy Peterson on March 13, 1948. He preceded her in death on June 23, 1981. She was a long time employee at Hillshire Farms, also a life long member at Emanuel Lutheran Church, New London. She loved gardening and spending time with her children and grandchildren.
    Ruth is survived by her children, Dennis (Sharon) Peterson, Waupaca; Donna Wegner, New London; a sister Ellen (Harlowe) Reinert; grandchildren: Abbey Peterson, Ridgefield CT; Kyle (Amber) Peterson, De Pere; Erica Wegner, Little Chute; Alissa Wegner, New London and Ashley Wegner, New London; and a great-grandchild on the way. She is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
    She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sisters, Lucille (Al) Strauss and Jeanette (Jim) Oashger and brothers, Harold (Rita) Schweitzer and Frank (Sandy) Schweitzer.
    Funeral services for Ruth will be held on Thursday, April 6, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Emanuel Lutheran Church, New London with Rev. Marcus Schultz officiating. Visitation will be held at the church on Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will be in the Floral Hill Cemetery, New London.
    The family would like to thank the staff at St. Joseph Residence and Trinity Terrace for all the wonderful care and concern shown to Ruth.
    A memorial fund has been established.

He had been a New London area resident all of his life and was formerly employed at Neenah Foundry for 20 years and at the Hillshire Farm Company in New London for 14 years until his retirement. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Sugar Bush.
    He is survived by his wife, Lois; two sons and daughters-in-law; Larry and Elizabeth Roloff, and Ted and Darla Roloff, all of New London; three daughters and two sons-in-law; Sandra and Jack Rasmussen, Fremont; Pamela and Richard Houk, New London; and Jane Roloff, Milwaukee; a sister and brother-in-law: Joyce and David Kalchek, Kewaunee; 13 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.
    Funeral services will be on Thursday, January 2, 1992, at 1 p.m. from Grace Lutheran Church, Sugar Bush, with Rev. Fredrick Berger officiating. Friends may call at the Cline-Hanson Funeral Home in New London on Wednesday, January 1, 1992, from 1 until 9 p.m. and on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the church.
