Merle R. Weihing, age 77, of Appleton, passed away on Monday, October 3, 2016, at his home after a lengthy illness. He was born on November 18, 1938, in New London, son of the late Gilbert and Linda (Rahmlow) Weihing. On October 22, 1960, Merle married Mary Petersen and together they would have celebrated 56 years of marriage this month. He served his country for nine years in the Wisconsin National Guard, and spent time as active duty during the Berlin Crisis.
Throughout Merle's career, he worked as an office manager at Serv-Us Bakers, Vice President and Treasurer at Home Savings and Loan, and office manager at Fox Valley Truck, retiring in April of 2001. Merle also put in countless hours as a volunteer at the United Way Committee Fund, Sexual Assault Crisis Center, Fox Valley Technical College Foundation, Fox Valley Lutheran High School Foundation, Bethany Lutheran Church and the Appleton Kiwanis Club. He was extremely dedicated to all of his service clubs.
In his free time, Merle enjoyed skiing, fishing with family and friends, bowling, golfing, playing sheepshead and cribbage and attending Packers games as a long time season ticket holder. Together, Merle and Mary enjoyed traveling, taking two trips to Switzerland and most recently a trip to the Holy Lands of Egypt and Israel for their 50th wedding anniversary. They also enjoyed car shows. Merle was very proud of his 1957 Chevy Bel Air. He was a true gentleman, and will be deeply missed.
