    Biography:
Appolonia Stark was born in what was then Prussia, in 1823. Other than that her parents were Christopher and Annie Stark, this writer knows little about her birth family.

According to the Commemorative Biographical Record of the Fox River Valley, 1895, pages 828-30 (which cover the Steffen family), Appolonia married John (Johann) Steffen in 1845 in Prussia. They came to the United States on the ship "Luconia," arriving in New York on June 12, 1848 with an infant daughter, at that time their only child, Anna.

According to the ship manifest, they came with John's father Jakob and his third wife Anna, numerous of John's siblings, one sister-in-law to Appolonia, and perhaps a cousin or two of John's. (See John's memorial for further information.)

In addition to Anna (who died early, in 1850 soon after arriving in the U.S.) John and Appolonia (Stark) Steffen had 8 more children, all born in the United States (oldest to youngest): Jacob, Nicholas, Peter, Ignatius David (I.D.), Frank Lewis, Martin, Mary E. and John Henry.

When they arrived in the U.S. they lived first in the area of Saratoga Springs, NY where John did wage labor. The rest of the Steffens (father, siblings) were there too. Then most of the Steffens began to relocate to the area of Hortonia, Outagamie, Wisconsin (later including Dale and Hortonville). One of John's half-brothers in 1850, then one of his brothers in 1851, his father Jakob with his wife and two sons/John's younger brothers in 1852. Then came John and Appolonia and 3 boys they had in New York State (leaving Anna buried in NY), in Spring 1855. John's brother Ignatz Steffen then came over from Germany sometime between 1854 and 1857 (records vary, latter date is one Ignatz gave on 1900 Federal Census) and joined his siblings and father/stepmother there. Two of John's brothers chose to stay in New York and his sister Katharine appears to have died there, according to the above Commemorative Biography.

The Steffen "clan" was certainly a pioneering, founding family in the Dale/Hortonville area of Outagamie County.

John Steffen was a farmer, by all accounts quite prosperous and prominent, and Appolonia a farmer's wife. Their farm adjoined that of Peter and Margaret Olk, and the Steffens and Olks enjoyed by all accounts a close relationship. John and Appolonia's daughter Mary married Peter and Margaret Olk's son John J., their son John Henry married the Olk's daughter Annie, and John's nephew Frederick, son of brother Ignatz Steffen, married Peter and Margaret's daughter Lucy Olk. Three Olk/Steffen marriages in one generation.

Appolonia's death on Dcember 11, 1893 was covered in The Weekly News of Antigo Wisconsin, interviewing her son I.D. Steffen, a prominent physician and oft-mayor of that town: "Dr. Steffen informs us that his father left the house at about 10 o'clock in the morning, leaving his wife attending to her household duties as usual, and apparently in the best of health. He returned in about an hour to find that she had passed away during his absence. The indications are that the blood vessel burst while she was making her bed, as there were spots of blood there. She passed out into the sitting room and dining room into the kitchen where she took a drink of water and then fell to the floor where she expired. She was 71 years old, and the old couple were preparing to celebrate their golden wedding in a few weeks. Her remains were buried Thursday."

Her husband John died less than two years later, after being stricken with "bowel trouble" for a few days, on October 7, 1895.

Both lifelong devout Roman Catholics, they were buried together in Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery, Hortonville, Wisconsin.

Applonia married Steffen, John Bef 1848. John (son of Steffen, Jacob and Houbreck, Mary Elizabeth) was born 19 Mar 1825; died 7 Oct 1895, Dale, Outagamie, Wisconsin, USA; was buried , Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery, Hortonville, Wisconsin, USA. [Group Sheet]

    Biography:
Nicholas Steffen was the 3rd of at least 9 children of John (Johann) and Appolonia (Stark) Steffen of Dale, Outagamie, Wisconsin. Both his parents were German immigrants who came over, with his grandfather Jakob Steffen, step-grandmother Anna Steffen, and numerous aunts and uncles, in 1848. (See Nicholas' parents memorials.)

Nicholas was born in New York State, where his parents were living before moving to what was then "Hortonia," Outagamie County, Wisconsin (now Dale and Hortonville) in the Spring of 1855. (Most of the other Steffens who came in 1848 also relocated to the Hortonville area from New York, including Grandpa and Grandma Jakob and Anna, and another borhter of his father, Ignatz, who came directly from Germany in about 1857.)

Nicholas grew up on a farm and was a farmer all his life. He lived in a world surrounded by Steffen siblings, cousins, uncles and aunts and of course -- as a child and young adult -- his grandparents. The Steffens were one of the true pioneering families of the area.

Nicholas married Elizabeth Miller on June 1, 1880 according to Wisconsin marriage records. He and Elizabeth had a boy and girl who died only weeks after being born: John in 1881 and Mary in 1882. They do not appear in any Census but their graves lay next to their parents'.

Nicholas and Elizabeth were Roman Catholic. Nicholas passed away on September 4, 1919 in Dale/Hortonville. His wife followed years later on March 29, 1932. They are buried together, with their two infant children, in Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery, Hortonville.

Nicholas married Miller, Elizabeth 1 Jun 1880. Elizabeth was born 3 Nov 1858, , , Wisconsin, USA; died 29 Mar 1932, Hortonville, Outagamie, Wisconsin, USA; was buried , Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery, Hortonville, Wisconsin, USA. [Group Sheet]

    Biography:
    I. D. STEFFEN, M. D. Thrice Mayor of Antigo and a representative citizen who has taken an active part in the advancement of the city, was born at Hor- tonville, Outagamie County, Wisconsin, December 17, 1855, the son of John and Applonia (Stark) Steffen. The Steffen family moved to Wisconsin from New York state in the spring of 1855. As a boy Dr. Steffen attended the rural schools of Hortonville and then en- tered Lawrence University from which he graduated in 1879. By thrift and diligence he was able to earn enough money to take him through the Rush Medical College of Chicago. Previously he had studied medi- cine under Dr. Hardacker of Hortonville. In 1900 Dr. Steffen took a post graduate course in surgery and med- icine in the New York Post Graduate Medical School and Hospital, New York City.
In 1884, Dr. Steffen was married to Miss Effie L. Nye of Hortonville, Wisconsin. To this union five children were born as follows : Bernice E., now Mrs. E. S. Nelson, of Antigo; Dr. Lyman A., who was grad- uated in medicine from Rush Medical College on June 10, 1912, served as a Major during the World War, be- ing attached to the British Expeditionary Force, and now associated with his father in Antigo; Glydon F., deceased; Margaret, instructor in history, and Richard D. Steffen, a student. Mrs. Steffen passed away on July 25, 1922, and was laid to rest in the Antigo ceme- tery.
Dr. Steffen was first elected mayor of Antigo in 1890 and then served again in 1899-1900 and was the first mayor elected under the commission form of govern- ment, in 1914. During his administration in 1890, the water system was laid out, in 1899 and 1900 his ad- ministration was instrumental in putting in a proper sewerage system in the city, a very necessary improve- ment. Dr. Steffen is a member of the Langlade Coun- ty Medical Society, the Wisconsin State Medical So- ciety, the American Medical Association, and the American Association of Railway Surgeons. For the past thirty years he has been surgeon for the Chicago & Northwestern railroad. Dr. Steffen opened the first hospital in the city of Antigo in 1890. Fraternally he holds memberships in the Masonic orders, has serv- ed as Master of the Blue Lodge and as High Priest in the Chapter. He was also the first eminent Com- mander of the Antigo Commandery, Knights Templars. Dr. Steffen is a member of the Ancient Accepted Scot- tish Rite of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He is President of the Langlade National Bank of Antigo since 1918. Previously he was a vice-president and a director of that institution. Dr. Steffen came to Antigo two years after the city was incorporated, 1887. He has seen Antigo and Langlade County grow from a hamlet and wilderness to a splendid progressive community. Among the many positions of honor and trust that the doctor has held while a resident of the city of Antigo was an appointment to a position on the State Board of Health by Governor J. J. Blaine in June, 1921. This appointment was unsolicited and came as a surprise. It is a position of honor and a recognition of the quali- fications of this distinguished Antigo citizen.

    Biography:
Ignatius David ("I.D.") Steffen was the 5th of at least 9 children of John and Appolonia Steffen. He was born December 17, 1855 on their farm in Dale, Outagamie, Wisconsin. Both his parents were German immigrants who came over as a married couple with his father's parents and various siblings and perhaps cousins in 1848. His father and mother moved to Dale from New York State the same year Ignatius was born. I.D. grew up surrounded by Steffen family -- grandfather and uncles who had also moved to the area.

Here is his biography from "Wisconsin Its Biography and History" by Ellis Usher, 1914 (just about 8 years before his death):

"Dr. I. D. Steffen. One of the representative citizens of Antigo and one who has taken a foremost place in the civic and social life of the city, as well as gaining prominence in his profession and in financial circles as well, is Dr. I.D. Steffen, practicing physician of this city since 1887 and vice president of the Langlade National Bank of Antigo. Dr. Steffen came here fresh from his studies, having, been graduated from Rush Medical College in Chicago in February, 1887, and so well has he prospered that from the beginning Antigo has held him. His connection with the Langlade National Bank began in 1901, first as a member of the directorate of the bank, and in about 1907 he was elected vice president. Prior to that, however, he had been a director and vice president of the First National Bank of Antigo, so that his connection with banks and banking is one of long standing, and he is well versed in finance and kindred subjects.

"Dr. Steffen was born at Hortonville, Outagamie county, Wisconsin, on December 17, 1855, and is a son of John and Applonia (Stark) Steffen, who came to Wisconsin from New York state in the spring of 1855. They were farming people, and Dr. Steffen was raised on the home farm, attending the country schools as a boy, and then entering Lawrence University, and graduating from that institution in 1879. Following that training he taught for four years in Hortonville, Wisconsin. During that time he was giving some attention to the study of medicine with Dr. Hardaeker of Hortonville, and he was able to save enough money from his four years of teaching to put him through Rush Medical College. In 1900 Dr. Steffen took a post graduate course in surgery and medicine in the New York Post Graduate Medical School & Hospital, in New York City, and he has in other ways prosecuted his studies, keeping well abreast of the times in the advance of his profession, so that his reputation has been enhanced with every passing year.

"In 1884 Dr. Steffen was married to Miss Effie L. Nye of Hortonville, Wisconsin, and to them have been born five children, named as follows: Bernice E.; Dr. Lyman A., who was graduated in medicine from Rush Medical College on June 10, 1912, and who is now engaged in practice in Virginia, Minnesota, but who is about to relinquish his practice there and join his father in the profession in Antigo; Glyndon F.; Margaret; and Richard D. Steffen.

"Dr. Steffen has performed praiseworthy service for Antigo in the mayor's chair, serving on three different occasions, - first in 1890, in 1899 and in 1900. He is a member of the Langlade County Medical Society, the Wisconsin State Medical Society and the American Medical Association, as well as the American Association of Railway Surgeons. He has been surgeon for the C. & N. W. Railroad for the past twentyone years, and is a member of the staff of the Antigo Hospital. In fraternal circles he has membership in the Masons, and has served several years as Master of the Blue Lodge, and in the Chapter he is now High Priest. He is also a member of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He is one of the prominent men of the city and with his family enjoys the high regard of the representative people of the community."

It should be added that Dr. Steffen's sister Mary was married to John J. Olk, and the latter was often involved with him in various civic and business ventures in Antigo. The Olks are also buried in Antigo Cemetery and have memorials on findagrave.

I.D. Steffen was Congregationalist, departing from the Roman Catholic upbringing he had had.

He died on November 21, 1922, only a few months after his wife Effie's death of that July. He is buried in Antigo Cemetery in a Steffen family site along with his wife, all of his children, one son-in-law and one grandson.

Ignatius married Nye, Effie Abt 1884. Effie (daughter of Nye, George and MacGregor, Elizabeth) was born Abt Oct 1862, Ellington, Outagamie, Wisconsin, USA; died 25 Jul 1922, Antigo, Langlade, Wisconsin, USA. [Group Sheet]

    Biography:
Lewis Steffen may have been born "Frank Lewis," and his name was often spelled "Louis" by census takers and a county historian (see below). But he appears to have typically gone by "Lewis Steffen."

He was born May 5, 1858, the 6th of at least 9 children of John and Appolonia (Stark) Steffen. His parents had immigrated from German with his father's father and stepmother in 1848, first settling in New York and then coming to Hortonville, Outagamie, Wisconsin in Spring 1855. Lewis grew up on a farm in Dale, Outagamie, Wisconsin near his grandfather Jakob Steffen and step-grandmother, and near some of his father's siblings and various cousins. (See his parents' and grandfather Jakob Steffen's biographies, also associated with Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery.)

Here is a short bio from the Commemorative Biographical Record of the Fox River Valley, (written in 1895), page 829-30 on his life:

"Louis Steffen was born May 5, 1860 (note: incorrect year 00 it was 1858) in Hortonia, Outagamie county, passed his youth and early manhood on the farm and at school, and at the age of twenty-one began working for his own account. For some years he was engaged in lumbering, and for the next five years followed farming in the employ of others, after which he bought a farm in North Dakota, near Jamestown, upon which he located and engaged in raising wheat. After living four years on this farm he sold it, then, in company with his brother Peter, bought the farm he now occupies and which they have since conducted. On May 18, 1887, Mr. Steffen married Miss Annie E. Steffen, who was born in Hortonia township, June 27, 1863, daughter of Jacob and Isabella Steffen, and two children have come to their home, Florence Jessie, born May 26, 1889, in North Dakota, where she died August 18, 1889, and Ercell, born December 18, 1890. Like the other members of his family Mr. Steffen is a member of the Catholic Church."

It must be noted that Lewis' wife Annie was his first cousin. Her father Jacob Steffen (see above) was Lewis' father, John's, full brother, both John and Jacob being sons of Jakob Steffen and his second wife Mary Elizabeth.

The above source, notes in another place that Lewis and his brother owned and operated a threshing outfit together, which they used with success to make money beyond what they made with their farm.

After the above biography was written in 1895, Lewis and his wife Annie had a third child, Gerald Ira, on December 9, 1897. Thus, they had two children -- a boy and a girl -- who lived to adulthood (Ercella and Gerald).

Lewis Steffen continued to live with his wife, two children and brother as long as two servants through the 1900 and 1910 Censuses. He appears to have been quite prosperous. He died on October 22, 1917 at the age of only 59, and was buried in Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery near his father Jakob, various siblings, nephews and nieces. His wife Anna was buried by him when she died years later in 1926.

Frank married Steffen, Anna E. 18 May 1887. Anna (daughter of Steffen, Jacob Jr. and McMurdo, Isabella) was born 27 Jun 1863, Hortonia, Outagamie, Wisconsin, USA; died 12 Jul 1926, Hortonville, Outagamie, Wisconsin, USA; was buried , Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery, Hortonville, Wisconsin, USA. Martin Steffen was born the 7th of at least 9 children of John and Appolonia (Stark) Steffen, in Dale, Outagamie, Wisconsin on April 23, 1860. His parents had emigrated from Germany in 1848 with his father's father Jakob and his father's stepmother Anna, and various siblings and perhaps cousins. After initially settling in New York State Martin's father had moved to Hortonia, Wisconsin in the Spring of 1855, in and around the same time his father Jakob and other siblings moved to the area. (For more birth family background see memorials for Martin's father, mother, grandfather Jakob and various uncles all connected to Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery on findagrave.) Martin grew up surrounded by Steffen family.
In 1889 Martin married Anna, also a daughter of German immigrants. (This writer knows nothing more about her birth family.)
Martin and Anna had at least 11 children: Margaret, Walter, Henry, Ella ("Alwina"), Robert, Roland, Lawrence, Harry, Vernon, George and Helen. At least two children preceded Martin in death: Margaret ("Maggie") in 1911, and Henry in 1920.
Martin was a farmer who, at least as of 1917, held 80 acres near the southern corners of Dale and Hortonville townships. He and his family were Roman Catholic. His wife Anna died June 30, 1922 in Hortonville and was buried in Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery there. Martin died July 9, 1926 and was buried next to her. Other children are buried in this cemetery too -- Margaret, Henry, daughter Ella her husband Charles Krueger and son Glendon Krueger, and probably others as well.

Martin married Deml, Anna Bef 1889. Anna (daughter of Deml, Peter and Klingshirn, Catherine) was born 6 Mar 1865; died 30 Jun 1922, Hortonville, Outagamie, Wisconsin, USA; was buried , Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery, Hortonville, Wisconsin, USA. [Group Sheet]

    Biography:
Mary E. Steffen was the 8th of 9 children of John and Appolonia (Stark) Steffen of Dale/Hortonville, Outagamie County, Wisconsin. Her parents both arrived from Germany, married and with some of the siblings of her father as well as his father and stepmother, in 1848. Her father was a prosperous farmer.

On May 4, 1886 she literally married the "boy-next -door," John J. Olk from the adjoining farm, whose parents were also German immigrants having arrived in 1857. They then moved to Antigo, Langlade County, Wisconsin that same year, where her husband became very prominent in the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad and generally in the town (see his findagrave memorial for details). Her brother Ignatius David (I.D.) Steffen, as a physician, co-starter of the Antigo Hospital and many times its mayor, was kind of a partner to her husband and also very prominent in Antigo society. Mary and her family, like her parents' and in-laws 'family, was devoutly Roman Catholic. Mary was very active in various works of Saint John the Evangelist RC church in Antigo.

Together she and her husband had 8 children. They had only two girls, both of whom died in infancy. One son, Rolland, died at age 16. The other 5 sons all survived well into adulthood. From oldest to youngest, these were: Henry, Harold, Clarence, John Steffen, and Merritt.

Mary E. (Steffen) Olk died of a stroke on April 29,1929. She was buried by her husband, son Rolland, son Henry and Henry's wife Helen, just inside the "Olk gate" (named after and paid for by her husband) at the Queen of Peace Catholic Cemetery. Son Merritt, his wife Cecil and son Thomas are buried at a "newer" Olk site elsewhere in the cemetery.

Mary married Olk, John J. 4 May 1886. John (son of Olk, Peter Sr. and Mueller, Margaret) was born 25 Apr 1859, Dale, Outagamie, Wisconsin, USA; died 6 Jun 1927, Antigo, Langlade, Wisconsin, USA. [Group Sheet]

    Biography:
Henry W. Steffen was the 4th of at least 11 children of Martin and Anna Steffen. Born in Hortonville, Outagamie, Wisconsin on March 24, 1893, he grew up a farm boy surrounded by Steffen relatives, as his Steffen grandparents, and numerous uncles, aunts and cousins from the Steffen side lived nearby. (Not much is known by this writer of his mother's birth family -- who it was, how local they were, etc.) (See his parent's memorials and links there for further information.)

At the time of his WWI draft registration, Henry was a cheesemaker.

Henry appears to have remained single his entire life. He preceded both his parents in death when he died on December 14, 1920 at the age of 27. He was buried in Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery, Hortonville, and his resting place is now near his parents and various siblings.

    Biography:
Robert Steffen was the 5th of at least 11 children of Martin and Anna Steffen, born August 5, 1896 in Hortonville, Outagamie, Wisconsin. His Steffen grandparents were John and Appolonia (Stark) Steffen and his great-grandfather was Jakob Steffen. His grandfather and father had many siblings in the area, and indeed the Steffen clan was a pioneering founding family in that area. (See memorials for all of these also in this cemetery's records on findagrave.) Thus Robert, who remained in this area all his life, lived his life surrounded by Steffen relatives.

He grew up a farm laborer and made his living as a farmer all his life. Sometime after 1920 but before 1930 he married Genevieve. (This writer has no information about her maiden name or birth family.) In 1930 his brothers Walter and Harry were living with he and his wife on his farm in Dale, near Hortonville. By 1940 it was just he and Genevieve on that same farm.

There are no records that Robert and Genevieve had children; certainly none recorded in the 1930 or 1940 Censuses or that appear in available birth records.

Robert died June 18, 1975 in New London, Wisconsin in the side of New London that is in Outagamie County. He was buried in Saints Peter and Paul Roman Catholic Cemetery, Hortonville, Outagamie, Wisconsin. His wife Genevieve was buried next to him when she died in 1983.

Robert — Boehler, Genevieve. Genevieve was born 30 Jan 1901; died 30 Mar 1983; was buried , Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery, Hortonville, Wisconsin, USA. [Group Sheet]
