Richard H. Haviland, age 80, of N8337 North Shore Lane, Menasha, passed away at Cherry Meadows Hospice on Saturday, May 12, 2012. Richard was born on September 30, 1931, in Antigo, to the late George and Ruby (Hafeman) Haviland. He married Ruth Crawford on May 1, 1954, in Portage, Wisconsin.
Dick was a unique man of rare character who had a positive impact on many. He served as a Reserve Captain in the Infantry, 32nd Division, receiving his honorable discharge in 1964. He enjoyed a gratifying 50+ years at Haviland Hearing Aids in partnership with his brother Duane. Dick was a founding member and past president of the Wisconsin Chapter of the National Hearing Aid Society, as well as board member and past president of the Fox Valley Technical College Board of Directors. He also served on the Fox Valley Symphony Board of Directors.
Dick had many diverse interests such as winemaking, astronomy, photography and oil painting. He was an enthusiastic outdoorsman who loved to take a carload of kids camping, skiing, hiking or to the museum. He was fun to be with and those times have provided many wonderful memories for his kids, grandkids, nieces and nephews.
Dick's passion in his later years was genealogy, with a special interest in the Civil War. At the age of 75 he published his first book titled "Splendid Gallantry" about the Union Army's Eleventh Corps, the Twenty-Sixth Wisconsin Volunteers - one of whom was an ancestor of Dick's. A few years later, his genealogical research prompted his 2nd book, "Finding Captain Myles Standish". He enjoyed traveling with Ruth to Civil War sites as well as England as part of his research, and cherished the family connections that he made as a result.
Dick is survived by his wife Ruth, and their children Rick (Julie) Haviland, Barbara (Gary) Hartwig, Tory Haviland (Norm Christnacht) and Peggy (Brian) Maillet. He will be missed by his grandchildren Nalani Haviland, Andy and Allison Hartwig, Olivia, Ruby and Louis Maillet, as well as his many loving nieces and nephews. Dick was the oldest of 10 children and is survived by brothers Duane (Janet), Colin, Keith, George and sister Diane (Del) Schmeichel. He was preceded in death by siblings Gary, Moonyean, David, and Kathy.
A memorial gathering will be held later in the summer. Time, date and location will be published in the Appleton Post Crescent.
The family would like to thank the staff and volunteers at Cherry Meadows Hospice for the loving care that Dick received. They would also like to extend their appreciation to Dr. Lee Vogel for her skill, kindness and compassion, and to Dr. William Guenther and the staff at the Cancer Center.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to Community Hospice Foundation - Cherry Meadows, 1818 N Meade St, Appleton, WI 54911.

Moonyean C. Glasheen (Haviland) "Moe", Brillion, Wisconsin. Moonyean Glasheen is finally at rest in her battle with cancer, passing away Thursday morning, August 16, 2007. She was born in 1934 in Antigo, Wisconsin, surviving all the adventures and tragedies of farm life. When the time came, she left the farm and came to the Fox Valley looking for work. She found marriage and four kids. The marriage didn't work out but the kids did. With the generous help of her siblings, she raised Dan, Tim, Chris, and Holly, who went on to adventures of their own. In 1994 she suffered the loss of her son, Timothy, a trucker who lost his life on the road.
Moe was able to express herself in her letter writing and drawings, sharing her wisdom, opinions and talents with all. Her charcoal drawings even put food on the table when she sold her pictures as she worked in the coat check room of the old Left Guard Supper Club.
A celebration of her life will be held at her sister Diane's home, W3935 DelRose Lane, (off Meade St., North of JJ) Appleton, Wisconsin. All are welcome. We will gather at 4 in the afternoon, Saturday, August 25th.

    Obituary:
Duane K. Haviland, Antigo, Wisconsin, native and resident of The Villages, Florida, passed away on August 7, 2014 at the age of 77 after a brief battle with cancer.
Duane was born in Antigo, Wisconsin on December 30, 1936. After graduating high school in 1955, Duane enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1956. After spending four years in the service, Duane briefly returned to Antigo where he met and married his wife Janet Lenzner. Duane and Janet enjoyed 52 years of marriage raising their three children in Appleton, Wisconsin before moving to their lake home in Shawano, Wisconsin and eventually residing in The Villages, Florida.
Duane's professional career spanned many decades as co-owner of Haviland Hearing Aids based in Appleton, Wisconsin. Duane and his older brother Dick proudly served numerous clients throughout their professional career, building Haviland Hearing Aids into a respected and trusted provider of hearing instruments to the hearing impaired. Duane was extremely happy and proud to have formed such a successful working partnership with his brother Dick for over 40 years.
Duane enjoyed evening golf cart rides to one of three town squares in The Villages, the house and pontoon rides on Legend Lake, the History Channel, and reading. Duane's true passion was golf. He enjoyed playing, teaching, shaving strokes, foot wedges, numerous mulligans, as well as watching golf from the comforts of his home. However, his passion for playing golf subsided a bit when his wife Janet started beating him on a regular basis!
Duane dealt with this "crushing defeat" on the golf course by spending more time with his most cherished accomplishment, his three children and six grandchildren. He loved spending time with them and teaching the values and sense of humor he had developed throughout his eventful life. Duane was a devoted family man whose generosity and sense of humor affected all he touched. Duane also paid great attention to detail and was never late…unless he was forced to wait for Janet!
Duane is survived by his wife Janet and their children Leah (Jeff) Lutz, Dewey (Tracy) Haviland and David (Stacy) Haviland. He will also be missed by his grandchildren Adam, Rylee, Griffin, and Jadyn Lutz as well as Kendall and Dane Haviland. Duane is further survived by his brother Keith; sisters-in-law: Ruth and Toni and brother-in-law Del Schmeichel.
He was preceded in death by his parents George and Ruby, and siblings Dick, Gary, Moonyean, Diane, Colin, Kathy, David, and George.
The committal service with military honors will take place at 11:00 am on Friday, September 5, 2014 at Central Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery, N2665 Highway QQ in King. A time of sharing will take place immediately following the service. To share online condolences, and for further information please visit www.wichmannfargo.com.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Central Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery are appreciated.

    Obituary:
    Diane Magee Schmeichel
Anyone who spent time with Diane heard the phrase "We are so lucky!" peppered into the conversation at least once or twice. She was the rare person who grabbed joy whenever she could and was aware of how fortunate she was to have found it. Mom was raised in Antigo and told many stories about life on the farm with her brothers and sister. She rode horses like a crazy person, raced any neighbor kid brave enough to try and nurtured all strays that happened across her path.
The adventure of California called after high school but she settled in Pennsylvania, married and raised her two daughters there. Home and family brought her back to Wisconsin in mid-life (with much pouting and resistance from her two teen-aged daughters. Sorry Mom, you were right.)
Diane was a trailblazer and worked many jobs out of the norm of the day, to make sure her girls had the opportunities they deserved. Semi-truck driver, bartender, waitress, bus driver, newspaper delivery and horse trainer were just a few. She retired from Appleton Coated in Combined Locks.
She found her soulmate while trail riding her horse on the back roads of Appleton at the same time Delmar Schmeichel was jogging his Standardbred mare. It was love at first sight. Del brought her much laughter and love. Their combined sense of humor and positivity was wondrous - nothing was too big or problematic, just another story to tell. Del and Diane built an adventurous second-act life together. Good times usually included horses and family - camping, riding, racing, training and raising foals and Shar Pei dogs brought many happy times.
On Thursday, Diane died suddenly at home at age 74. Her positive spirit and love for all she was blessed with will be carried on with gusto by those she leaves behind, especially her beloved husband, Delmar Schmeichel of Appleton. She is survived by siblings Duane (Janet) Haviland of Shawano, Colin Haviland of Minneapolis, Ruth Haviland of Appleton and Keith Haviland, Marathon. She was a role model to daughters Johnna (Bob) VanDeurzen, Kaukauna and Amy Self, Freedom and to grandchildren Tanner and Bridget Self, Freedom and Ben VanDeurzen, Kaukauna. She will be sadly missed by Del's children Jean Marie (David) Hinds, Steve (Lynn) Schmeichel and Jeff (Martha) Schmeichel, all of Appleton. Grandchildren include Daniel (Nicole) Schmeichel, Sarah (Joseph) Murphy, Erica (Chris) Laabs, Matthew Schmeichel, Amie (Timothy) Campbell, Nichole (Brian) Mauthe and Bob VanDeurzen. She was preceded in death by siblings Richard Haviland, Gary Haviland, David Haviland and her best-sister-ever Moonyean Glasheen. Diane was loved by many nieces, nephews, great grandchildren, friends and fellow horse folk.
In accordance with Diane's wishes, a private family celebration will be held. To offer condolences, please visit www.verkuilenfh.com. A memorial fund has been established in her name.
Thank you to her friend Mary Pleuss for the care and joy over the years and to the staff of Verkuilen Funeral Home for their comfort and support during this time.
