    Edward A. Wettengel, 93, Appleton, died Thursday, June 16, 2011, at St. Elizabeth Hospital. Ed was born Jan. 29, 1918, in Appleton, to the late Edward A. and Laura J. (Wenzel) Wettengel. He had one brother, Reginald, who died as an infant. He graduated with the Class of 1936 at St. Mary Central H.S. in Menasha. Ed then attended Lawrence University in Appleton, graduating in 1947, and the University of Detroit Mercy, graduating in 1951. He proudly served his country during World War II with the U.S. Air Force in the South Pacific, New Guinea, the Philippines, and Japan as a Communications Security Officer.
    He was united in marriage to Florence Jaeger in 1947. She preceded him in death in 1984. He was then united in marriage in 1989 to Margaret E. Arps. She preceded him in death in 1996. He married again in 2000 to Genevieve Gamsky Vollmer.
    Ed was an engineer working as a house contractor for many years, as well as doing building, structural design and general engineering. He worked at Inland Steel Products and T.L. Smith Company, both in Milwaukee, and Safeway Steel Products in Waukesha, retiring in 1980.
    Ed was very active in the community. He belonged to the Knights of Columbus, Catholic Order of Foresters, Elks Lodge #676, American Legion Post #38, Catholic War Veterans Post #204, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #2778, Riverview Country Club, Travelers Protective Association, American Association of Retired Persons and the U.S. Air Force Reserve Officers Association. Ed was very active at St. Thomas More Catholic Church where he served as a lector, funeral mass server, hospital communion distributor and choir member.
    Ed enjoyed golf, bowling, singing and especially spending time with his family and friends.
    He will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Genevieve; and three stepchildren from that marriage, Peter (Nancy) Vollmer, Escondido, Calif.; Thomas (Robin) Vollmer, Washington, D.C.; and James Vollmer, Appleton; five stepgrandchildren, six stepgreat-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Shirley Gamsky, Appleton; nieces, nephews and cousins; special extended family members, Pat and Kathy Mahoney, Neenah.
    From his first marriage, he is survived by three sisters-in-law, Elizabeth (Lamont) Jaeger, Laguna Woods, Calif.; Jaqueline Jaeger, Littleton, Colo.; and Mary Ann Jaeger, Franklin Park, Ill.; nieces, nephews and cousins.
    From his second marriage to Marge Arps, he is survived by six stepchildren, James (Bernadette) Arps, Appleton; Margaret Bourgeois, Paul (Kathy) Arps, Peter Arps, all of Redington Shores, Fla.; Mary (Thomas) Keller, Germantown, Wis.; and Mark (Holly) Arps, Woodbury, Minn.; brother-in-law, John Schmitzer, Utah; sister-in-law, Louise Schmitzer, Neenah; brother-in-law, Alex Schmitzer, Jr., Neenah; seven stepgrandchildren, stepgreat-grandchild, nieces, nephews and cousins.
    A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 22, at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 1810 N. McDonald St., Appleton, with Father Gerald Falk officiating, followed by full military honors performed by Appleton Legion Post #38 and Appleton VFW Post #2778. Friends may visit at the church on Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. Interment will take place at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Appleton.
    In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
    The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at St. Elizabeth Hospital ICU, especially Diane, for the kindness, care and concern shown to Ed and his family.
    Ed was a man of great integrity and of charity. He had responsive concern and kindness towards his fellow man and had firm religious convictions. Edward was loved and respected by all with whom he shared his life, particularly his wife who will miss his love, companionship, compatibility, strength, humor, care and understanding.
