    Obituary:
    F. A. Phillips died at his home in the Town of Cary, last Saturday, March 3, of valvular trouble of the heart at the age of 84 years. Friend Asel Phillips was born in Alleghany county, New York, January 24, 1833. He was married to Maria Burt in 1857 and to this union five children were born, four of whom are living, George and Sarah, of Boscobel, Ina, of Marco, Montana, and Curtiss of Superior WI. His first wife died in 1871. In 1873 he was married to Mrs. Charlotte Van Keuren, a widow, with one son, Wallace W. Van Keuren, both living on the farm in the Town of Cary. From this marriage two children were born, Jay and Edward, both of the Town of Cary. Out of a family of ten children he is survived by an only sister, Mrs. Robert Crabb, of Los Angeles, CA. Besides the above mentioned there are left to mourn him thirty-five grand children and thirty-nine great grandchildren. Mr. Phillips came to Wisconsin in the sixties, settling at De Pere, then a small lumbering town where he worked until he bought a piece of land in the Town of Lawrence, near there. In 1873, he moved to Crawford County, living there on a farm of his purchase until he came to the Pittsville district about 20 years ago. Mr. Phillips had the distinction of being the second settler in the Town of Cary. Grandpa Phillips was a genial, old gentleman, a good neighbor, a firm friend and staunch American. His ancestors date back to the old colonial times, his father being at one time a member of the old colonial "minute men", the national guard of those days. (More...)

Friend married Burt, Maria Sarah 24 Sep 1857. Maria (daughter of Burt, Phineas and Evans, Polly) was born Abt 1840; died 3 Sep 1872; was buried , South Lawrence Cemetery, Depere, Wisconsin, USA. [Group Sheet]
