CASHTON - George B. Leis, 96, of Cashton passed away peacefully Friday, April 6, 2018, at Bridge Path at the Morrow Home in Sparta, surrounded by his wife of 74 years and his children.
He was born in Brush Creek, East of Cashton, to Peter Sr. and Mary (Suhr) Leis, Jan. 13, 1922.
George graduated from Pine Hollow Catholic School, north of Cashton, in 1936. He was united in marriage to Dolores Brueggen April 18, 1944. They farmed a few years before moving to Cashton. George was a custodian and bus driver for Cashton Public Schools. He really enjoyed being around children and drove bus for kindergartners and special education students.
George was Cashton's handyman! He always told his children, "God put us here to help each other," and that is how he lived his life. He also spent many hours working with Al Webster, doing electrical work around the area. George spent many years with the Cashton Fire Department and was a charter member of Cashton's First Responders. He was also active at his church and with the Knights of Columbus. In 1971, George started a saw filing business and enjoyed that hobby until moving to Sparta, in 2010.
In retirement, George helped at the Cashton Veterinary Clinic. In 2010, George and Dolores were honored to be the Parade Marshall's of the Cashton Fall Festival. George enjoyed being outside, hunting, fishing and helping on the farms of many friends and family.
He is survived by his wife, Dolores; his son, Dan (Sonia) Leis of West Salem and their children, Nick (Tammy) Leis, Nicole Blakey, Bryan Crogan and Brad Crogan; his daughter, Marilyn (Kevin) Caulum of Holmen and their children, Laura (Paul) Gratton and Anne Caulum; his sister, Theresa Schaub; 12 great-grandchildren, Cooper, Owen, Devin, Connor, Taylor, Jordy, Dorian, Elliott, Everleigh, Rebekah, Isaiah and Savannah; and many in-laws from the Brueggen side.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Albert, Martin and Peter Jr.; and his sister, Mary Brueggeman.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 10, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Cashton. Father Michael Klos will officiate. Burial will follow in Pine Hollow Cemetery. Family and friends are invited for visitation from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. Monday, April 9, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with a prayer service by Pastor Fran Hewuse beginning at 7 p.m. and concluding with a rosary led by the Knights of Columbus.
