Kersten, Joyce E.
Joyce E. Kersten, age 82 of Shawano, passed away Saturday, July 2, 2011 at a local nursing home. Born on May 26, 1929 in Westfield, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Mabel (Mervyn) Boardman. Joyce was a graduate of the Shawano High School, class of 1947. On December 18, 1948 she was united in marriage to Edward Kersten in Clintonville. The couple lived in the Appleton area for 40 years and returned to the Shawano area in 1987.
Joyce was a member of the Peace United Church of Christ in Shawano and was a past member of the Afternoon Circle. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. In her free time she enjoyed sewing, doing crafts and reading.
Joyce is survived by: her husband of 62 years, Edward; a daughter, Sally (Terry) Knope of Shawano; a son, Steven (Doris) Kersten of Clintonville; 6 grandchildren, Terry (Leah) Knope, Jr., Aaron (Kim) Knope, Katrina Schroeder, Andrew Kersten, Laura (Brian) Blumreich, Holly (Tim) Kohn; and 5 great-grandchildren, Kalleigh and Karter Schroeder, and Nicholas, Alex and Katie Kohn. Joyce is further survived by: 3 sisters, Shirley (Jerry) Herbst, Jan Erdmann, Sharon (Jim) Erdmann; a brother, Jim (Dawn) Boardman; 3 sisters-in-law, Hildegard Kersten, Karen Boardman, Joyce Boardman; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Joyce was preceded in death by: her parents; stepfather, Oscar Carlson; 3 brothers, Gordon (Ann), Jack and Richard Boardman; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Edward and Sarah Kersten; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Marlin (Butch) Erdmann, Cecelia and Dean Bazile, Duane Kersten; and 3 nieces, Kathy Bazile Krutz, Gwen Erdmann Theabo and Susan Boardman Preuss.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 8, 2011 at the Peace United Church of Christ in Shawano with the Rev. Marty Black officiating. Burial will be in the Friendship Cemetery in the Town of Belle Plaine. Visitation will be held at the church on Friday after 9am until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established. Swedberg Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.
The family would like to thank Dr. Kevin Mortara, the staff of ThedaCare Hospice and Evergreen Care Center, Pastor Marty Black, Chuck Daily, Florence Miller, Barb Bubolz and Pieces of Peace Quilt Group for all the wonderful care and concern.
