    Raymond A. "Ray" Hooyman, 86, Appleton, passed away on April 23, 2009. He was born June 5, 1922, in Freedom, the son of the late Anton and Minnie (Vander Loop) Hooyman. Ray lived in the rural area west of the Village of Freedom. On May 10, 1947, he married Marian Van Heeswyk at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church in Kimberly.
    After graduating from Freedom High School, he took a position with Gloudemanns Department Store in Freedom. In 1942, he served in the U.S. Signal Corps during World War II. After his discharge in 1946, he attended Business College while working at Kimberly-Clark in the evening.
    Ray possessed the vision, determination and the drive to see many of his dreams become a reality. His life's career was with Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, eventually leading from a sales representative to a sales manager. Ray was involved in veteran's activities from secretary to president of the Wisconsin Chapter of Metropolitan Life retirees. He was awarded the ECKER Award for all his achievements. After his retirement, he worked for an interval as a field representative on job placement for handicapped and disadvantaged individuals of Private Industry Council in Appleton.
    Ray was a member of the Johnston-Blessman American Legion Post #38 and after going up the ranks he served as Commander. He was also a member of the Harvey Pierre Post #2778 - VFW of Appleton. Ray enjoyed over 40 years as a member of the Optimist Club of Appleton, serving as Lieutenant Governor of District 9. As a winter bird in Arizona, Ray loved helping organize the barbeque at the Sunshine Acres, a home for disadvantaged children.
    Ray was a member of St. Therese Catholic Church and served as a Eucharistic minister in various churches wherever he lived. He loved to golf, fish and laugh with his many friends from Arizona, California or wherever he and Marian traveled.
    Ray is survived by his wife, Marian Hooyman; two daughters, Nancy (Arthur) Hatley, Antioch, Calif.; and Donna (Perry) Kidder, Hilbert; son, Jeff (Polly) Hooyman, Davenport, Iowa; grandchildren, Tony Hooyman; Cole, Olivia and Alexis Hatley; two step-grandchildren, Callie (Geoffrey) Lacy and Lindsay (Ryan) McGuan; two brothers, Robert (Lorena) Hooyman, Minnetonka, Minn.; and Lester (Kathleen) Hooyman, Freedom; brothers-in-law, Cyril (Norma) Van Heeswyk and Hank Peerenboom. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
    Ray was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Dianne Hooyman; brother, Ralph (Myrna) Hooyman; and his sister, Mary Therese Hooyman.
    The memorial service for Raymond will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 28, 2009, at ST. THERESE CATHOLIC CHURCH, Morrison Street at Wisconsin Avenue, Appleton, with Fr. William Hoffman officiating. Full Military honors will follow the service at church. Inurnment will take place at Holy Name Catholic Cemetery, Kimberly. The family will receive relatives and friends at the church on Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass.

    Les Hooyman, 88, Freedom, passed away on October 11, 2013 at Appleton Medical Center. Les was born on November 30, 1924 in Freedom to the late Tony and Minnie (Vanderloop) Hooyman. He was a graduate of Freedom High School where he and his future wife Jean served as Prom King and Queen. In 1946 Les married his High School Sweetheart, Kathleen "Jean" Maulick and they enjoyed over 67 years together. Les owned and operated Hooyman's TV and Appliance in Freedom for many years. Family always came first to Les and at work, his customers were family. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was a man of Godliness, honesty, integrity and responsibility but also had an awesome sense of humor. Les was a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church, past president of the Freedom Lion's Club and a former member of the Freedom School Board. Les loved spending time at the family cottage near Crivitz, loved the outdoors and especially loved hunting and fishing. He also loved raising his English Setters, playing cards and bowling. Les was an avid Packers and Cubs fan, was a former undefeated High School Boxing Champ and basketball coach in his early years.
    He will be sadly missed by his wife Jean, children Kathy (Ron) Hayes, Oconto; Gary (Sherry) Hooyman, Shiocton and Debbie (Joe) Vandenberg, De Pere, 6 grandchildren: Ron (Staci) Hayes, Lori Zavada, Trisha (Chad) Reader, Sara (Tim) Perrizo, Tami (special friend John) Hooyman and Scott (Melissa) Hooyman, 13 great-grandchildren, sisters-in-law: Marion Hooyman and Lorena Hooyman, brothers-in-law Mike (Mary Therese) Maulick and Bob (Diana) Maulick as well as many other relatives and friends.
    He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Ray, Ralph and Robert Hooyman and one sister Mary Hooyman.
    There will be funeral services for Les on Monday October 14, 2013 at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Freedom at 12:00 noon. Funeral service will be held at St. Joan of Arc Church, 4537 3rd Ave. S., Minneapolis, on Wednesday, July 17 with visitation from 12:30-2 PM, service at 2 PM followed by burial in the Memorial Garden at the church.     Debra A. Vandenberg, age 56 of De Pere passed away surrounded by her family at Appleton Medical Center July 2nd following complications from surgery.
    Debbie was born in Freedom on Oct. 29, 1957. She worked at Humana in De Pere for 31 years. Debbie married Joe Vandenberg on September 13, 1986 and they spent 27 wonderful years together.
    Debbie loved to work in her flower garden, play in cribbage tournaments with her Mom, shop especially at Craft Fairs in Kohler, and spend time at the cottage in Crivitz. She was also a member of the Sweet Adelines as she had a beautiful singing voice and often sang at weddings and funerals.
    Debbie is survived by her husband, Joe Vandenberg (De Pere) ; mother Kathleen (Jean)Hooyman, Freedom; sister Kathy Hayes (Ron) Oconto, brother Gary Hooyman (Sherry) Shiocton; brothers-in -law: Dick (Ruth) Kaukauna; Tom(Sherry), Sheboygan; Tony (June) West Bend; Jon, Freedom; Robb Appleton; Steve (Yati) Kaukauna. Godchildren: Sara Perrizo, Oconto; Scott Hooyman, Seymour; Tricia Schuh, Kaukauna .
    She is further survived by her beloved dog Micah and many nieces and nephews and aunts and uncles. She was preceded in death by her father Les Hooyman last October and special friend Mary Verbeten. Online condolences may be offered at www.wichmannfargo.com.
    Funeral liturgy will be held on July 7, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at ST. NICHOLAS CATHOLIC CHURCH, W 2037 County Road S in Freedom with Father Walter Stumpf officiating. A time of visitation will be held at 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Sunday July 6, 2014 with a prayer service at 5:30 p.m. at FARGO FUNERAL HOME, 400 W Wisconsin Ave in Kaukauna, and again on Monday July 7, 2014 at the church from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service.
