Obituary:
Lorraine J. DeGroot, 90, of South Third Street, No. 234, Niles, died at 2 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 22, 2011 at West Woods of Niles following a brief illness.
She was born Sept. 16, 1921 in Little Chute, Wis. to Carl Van Berkel and Sarah (Van Linn) Van Berkel. She moved from Little Chute to Niles in 1946.
Lorraine owned and operated Wisconsin Cheese Mart in Niles. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and the church's altar and Rosary society.
She married William V. "Bill" DeGroot on April 23, 1942 in Little Chute. He died on Feb. 20, 1994.
She was also preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
She is survived by two sons, Gary W. (Sandra) DeGroot of Niles and Donald L. (Donna) DeGroot of Colleyville, Texas; a grandson, Michael W. DeGroot of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; granddaughter, Heidi L. Lewis of Dallas, Texas; and a sister, Esther Ermers of Appleton, Wis.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 26 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Niles with the Rev. David Otto of the church officiating.
Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Niles.
There will be no visitation.
Arrangements were made by Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles.

Obituary:
Lorraine De Groot,(Van Berkel) 90, passed away in Niles, Michigan, on September 22, 2011. She was born on September 16, 1921 in Little Chute, Wisconsin to Carl and Sarah (Van Linn) Van Berkel. She was a 1940 graduate of Kimberly High School. In April 1942, she married Bill De Groot. In 1946, they moved to Niles, Michigan. Together they operated the Wisconsin Cheese Mart for many years. Bill passed away in 1994. Lorraine was active in her church and community. She loved to paint ceramics and shared many gifts with family and friends.
She is survived by her sons, Gary (Sandra) and grandson Michael, Donald (Donna) and granddaughter Heidi (Scott) Lewis. She is also survived by her sister Esther Ermers of Kimberly Wisconsin, Katie Van Berkel of North Carolina, and Shirley Van Berkel of Combined Locks.
She was preceded in death by Bernard Van Berkel, Grace Kettner (George), Mayme De Groot (Harold), and George Van Berkel, John and Hilda De Groot, Gladys and Frances Micke, Helen and Pete Melchior, and Bill's parents, Henry and Gertrude De Groot.
A private funeral was held in Niles, Michigan. Donations can be made in Lorraine's name to the American Heart Association .
