Obituary:
Almira (Horn) Stanke, age 90, Greenville, died peacefully on January 14, 2009, of natural causes.
The memorial service will be at 1 p.m. on Sunday, January 18, 2009, at the Wichmann Funeral Home, 537 N. Superior St., Appleton. Friends will be received at the funeral home on Sunday from 11 a.m. until the time of the service. A private burial service will be held in Greenwood during this spring. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund in Almira's name is being established.
The family would like to extend a heart felt thank you to those who befriended and attended to Almira during her stay at Living Tree Estates. We consider all of you extended family.

Stanke, Almira (SEP 1941 - 14 JAN 2009)
Almira Stanke, 90, a former hospital volunteer, avid quilter and cross-stitch artist, died peacefully on Jan. 14, 2009, of natural causes. She spent her final years at the Living Tree Estates, Greenville. A memorial service was held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 18, at the Wichmann Funeral Home, Appleton. A private burial service will be held in Greenwood this spring.
Almira Horn was born and raised in Greenwood, where her parents, Gustave and Anna Horn, were dairy farmers. In September 1941, she and Ed Stanke eloped to Pine City, Minn. She traveled to California where her husband was stationed in the Army. She worked on the base while waiting for his return from overseas. After migrating back to the Midwest, they raised two children in Wausau and Neenah. His work took them to Butler, Ala., Prairie du Sac, and finally Rice Lake. She worked as a volunteer patient escort at the hospital in Rice Lake, and donated handmade crafts. She often attended church with friends in the area.
Survivors include two children, Judy, Appleton, and Dennis (Marianne), LaCrosse; six grandchildren, Kara, Jamie, Samuel, Theodore, Candice, and Amanda; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Herbert (Lila) Horn, Greenwood, Greenwood, and a sister-in-law, Betty Horn.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Gustav and Anna; and a brother, Norman.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to those who befriended and attended to her during her stay at Living Tree Estates. We consider all of you extended family.
A memorial fund in her name is being established.
Wichmann Funeral Home, Appleton, is assisting the family with arrangements.
