    Obituary:
    Graef, Maxine (Schalk) May 18, 1914 - March 15, 2009
Maxine Adeline was born at home in Appleton to Max and Elma Brockman Schalk. She was a little girl when the family moved to Neenah, where she and her brother Donald attended Neenah schools and she graduated as salutatorian of her high school class. She graduated from Lawrence College in Appleton, in 1936. While at Lawrence she was a member and president of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and on the May Court. She next attended secretarial school in Milwaukee then returned to Appleton where she worked as an administrative assistant to Lawrence College presidents Millis, Wriston, and Pusey.
In 1940, she married L. Robert Graef with whom she was to share 59 years of life, love and a lot of fun. They were transferred to the New York City sales office by Thilmany in 1947. They lived and raised their two daughters in New Jersey until another Thilmany transfer brought them back to Appleton in 1963. After Bob's death in 1999, Maxine moved to the Mary's Wood s Retirement Community in Lake Oswego, Oregon to be near some of her family.
Throughout her life she cherished her family, friends and faith. She was committed to her community, volunteering in PTA, and Kings Daughters, belonging to the Kappa Alpha Theta Alumnae chapters and Teacups. With Bob, she quietly supported other causes, including Rawhide, First Congregational Church and Lawrence University.
Maxine's houses were always lovely places to be, filled with fresh flowers, good food and warm hospitality. She enjoyed learning, literature, gardening, travel, nature, the north woods of Wisconsin and the performing arts. She attended symphony, opera and ballet regularly and forever enjoyed music of the Big Band Era.
Survivors include: daughter and son-in-law, Roberta Carlin and Richard Carlin of Cincinnati, Ohio; daughter and son-in-law, Marcia Robison and Horace Robison of Ridgefield, Washington; grandchildren: Kristina Potter and husband Jason Potter of Dallas, Texas; Robert Olson of Tucson, Arizona; Claire Carlin of Washington, DC; Charles Carlin and wife Rebecca Carlin of St. George, Utah; and three great-grandchildren, Madelaine, Gabrielle and Everett Potter.
Maxine will always be a light and inspiration to her family.
Remembrances to the Infant Welfare Circle of King's Daughters or Kappa Alpha Theta Foundation.
A memorial service was held at Mary's woods, and a private service will be held at the family home, Duck Lake, Wisconsin.

Maxine married Graef, Robert Abt 1940. Robert was born 13 Dec 1914; died 10 Sep 1999, Appleton, Outagamie, Wisconsin, USA. [Group Sheet]
