Raoul "Rowdy" Derek Smith, 85, Green Bay, formerly of Temple Terrace, Fla., Lompoc, Calif., Satellite Beach, Fla., and Appleton, Wis., passed away Monday evening, November 2, 2009, after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's. He was born December 15, 1923, to the late James Henry Nelson Smith and Irma Margaret (Fischer) Smith of Appleton. Rowdy proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. On Jan. 31, 1948, he married Jocarol Arcidiacono of Philadelphia, Pa. He spent the majority of his career with NASA at Kennedy Space Center in Florida as an aeronautical engineer and retired in 1988 as head of Space Shuttle Communications at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. In addition to his career, Rowdy was an award-winning and internationally recognized amateur poet. Even with the onset of Alzheimer's, Rowdy still sought to entertain his family, friends and often perfect strangers with his unique brand of wit.

A memorial service will be held in June of 2010 at Memorial Highlands Cemetery in Appleton.
Rowdy's family extends their gratitude to the caring staff of Kindred Hearts, N.E.W. Curative Insider's programs, and most especially Golden Living-Village Gardens Nursing Home and AseraCare Hospice, without whom we would not have been able to cope.
    The good and the bad,
    the happy and sad,
all of these we will always remember.
    The highs and the lows,
    the triumphs and woes,
from the first of the year
    through December.
    The tastes, sights,
    and sounds
    from life's merry-go-rounds
    Yes, Pops,
    we will always remember.
